언약궤의 귀환 뿌리깊은 선민의식 보여주는 사무엘상 6장

사무엘상 6장은 언약궤가 블레셋 땅에서 이스라엘로 돌아오는 장면을 중심으로, 인간이 신 앞에서 가져야 할 태도와 신의 임재에 대한 경외심을 다시 묻습니다.

1. 블레셋 사람들의 공포와 결정

그렇게 공포의 언약궤는 블레셋 땅에 7개월 동안 있게 됩니다. 있는 동안 재앙이 넘쳤겠죠. 마을에 소위 종기와 같은 독종 등으로 죽어나갔습니다. 그래서 이들은 언약궤를 돌려줄 결심을 합니다. 그러나 그냥 보내면 안 될 것 같으니 일종의 속건제를 함께 보내라고 조언합니다. 일종의 사죄 의미라고 볼 수 있습니다.

 

1.The ark of the Lord was in the country of the Philistines for seven months. 2 And the Philistines called for the priests and the diviners and said, "What shall we do with the ark of the Lord? Tell us with what we shall send it to its place." 3 They said, "If you send away the ark of the God of Israel, do not send it empty, but by all means return him a guilt offering. Then you will be healed, and it will be known to you why his hand does not turn away from you." 4. And they said, "What is the guilt offering that we shall return to him?" They answered, "Five golden tumours and five golden mice, according to the number of the lords of the Philistines, for the same plague was on all of you and on your lords.

5. So you must make images of your tumours and images of your mice that ravage the land, and give glory to the God of Israel. Perhaps he will lighten his hand from off you and your gods and your land. 6. Why should you harden your hearts as the Egyptians and Pharaoh hardened their hearts? After he had dealt severely with them, did they not send the people away, and they departed?

 

그렇게 언약궤에 금독종과 금쥐를 함께 달려서 보내려고 하는데요. 금독종이 뭔가 했더니 자신들을 죽음으로 몬 종기를 형상화한 것입니다. 그런데 왜 하필 5개였을까요? 이는 블레셋은 5대 도시로 구성된 도시 연맹체였기 때문입니다. 아스돗, 가사, 아스글론, 가드, 에그론을 대표하여 그리 만들었다고 합니다. 그리고 이후부터 금으로 만든 독종과 쥐는 신의 분노를 달래는 상징적 예물로 여기게 되었다고 합니다. 물론 그렇다고 이것이 전수되어서 현대까지 활용되는 것으로는 보이지 않습니다. 그냥 문화적 잔재로 남아있는 것으로 알려져 있을 뿐입니다.

 

새 수레와 젖소 실험

 

7 Now then, take and prepare a new cart and two milk cows on which there has never come a yoke, and yoke the cows to the cart, but take their calves home, away from them. 8 And take the ark of the Lord and place it on the cart and put in a box at its side the figures of gold, which you are returning to him as a guilt offering. Then send it off and let it go its way 9 and watch. If it goes up on the way to its own land, to Beth-shemesh, then it is he who has done us this great harm, but if not, then we shall know that it is not his hand that struck us; it happened to us by coincidence."

 

일단 여러 정황들로 보았을 때 블레셋 인들은 이스라엘의 언약궤가 재앙의 원인이라고 믿긴 하였습니다. 그러나 심증만 있을 뿐이었던 거죠. 그래서 이들은 새 수레를 준비하고 멍에를 맨 적 없는, 갓 새끼를 낳은 젖소 두 마리를 메워 언약궤를 싣기로 합니다. 그리고 그 수레가 히브리인들이 있는 벳세메스로 곧장 돌아간다면 이는 명백히 하나님의 뜻임이 맞다고 보기로 한 것입니다.

 

그렇게 젖소는 에그론이란 저지대 평야에서 북동향 산지에 해당하는 벳세메스로 올라갔다는 것인데 신의 개입 없이는 불가능한 이동 방향이었다고 합니다. 이것이 의미하는 것은 방향을 거슬러 오른다는 종교적 상징, 그리고 타락한 세계에서 신에게로 향하는 역방향적 순종을 볼 수 있을 겁니다.

 

그런데 생각해보면 잘못은 야훼를 모시는 이스라엘인들이 한 것인데 왜 블레셋 인들이 벌을 받고 있던 걸까요? 블레셋 인들은 그저 전쟁에서 이기고 언약궤를 전리품으로 가져온 것뿐일 텐데요. 개인적인 생각으로는 그냥 야훼가 블레셋 사람들한테도 임재해서 당신을 믿게 하면 될 것을 왜 굳이 벌까지 내리고 그렇게 폐쇄적으로 군 것인지 이해가 안 갑니다. 이 역시도 이스라엘의 뿌리깊은 선민사상이 느껴지는 대목입니다. 현대인이 극혐 하는 선민사상의 시초가 유대교였다니 좀 의외네요. 선민사상과 중화사상의 비교는 저 아래 포스팅을 참고하시면 되고요.

2. 새 수레와 젖소 실험

그렇게 젖소들은 벳세메스로 향하였고 언약궤를 본 이스라엘 사람들은 기뻐하며 난리도 아니었습니다. 

10. The men did so, and took two milk cows and yoked them to the cart and shut up their calves at home. 11 And they put the ark of the Lord on the cart and the box with the golden mice and the images of the tumours. 12 And the cows went straight in the direction of Beth-shemesh along one highway, lowing as they went. They turned neither to the right nor to the left, and the lords of the Philistines went after them as far as the border of Beth-shemesh.

 

밀 농사를 하다가 수레를 발견한 사람들은 즉각적으로 자발적인 예배를 올리게 됩니다. 얼마나 기뻤겠습니까. 이들은 암소를 번제물로 바치고 수레의 나무를 쪼개서 예배를 올립니다. 그리고 예배의 직을 맡은 레위인들이 등장해서 관여합니다. 이런저런 의례를 마치고 블레셋 사람들은 그 장면을 보고 에그론으로 돌아갔다고 합니다.

 

13 Now the people of Beth-shemesh were reaping their wheat harvest in the valley. And when they lifted up their eyes and saw the ark, they rejoiced to see it. 14 The cart came into the field of Joshua of Beth-shemesh and stopped there. A great stone was there. And they split up the wood of the cart and offered the cows as a burnt offering to the Lord. 15 And the Levites took down the ark of the Lord and the box that was beside it. in which were the golden figures, and set them upon the great stone. And the men of Beth-shemesh offered burnt offerings and sacrificed sacrifices on that day to the Lord. 16 And when the five lords of the Philistines saw it, they returned that day to Ekron.

3. 비현실적인 이야기

지금까지 진행되는 내용을 보면 좀 터무니없게 들립니다. 뭔가 쇠약해지는 신앙심을, 그러니까 집나간 신앙심을 되찾아 오기 위해 일종의 발악을 하는 것 같단 말이죠. 너네 이래도 안 믿을 거야? 이런 기적을 보이셨다고, 뭐 이런 생각이 듭니다.

4. 뜬금포 해석

사람들은 언약궤와 더불어 도착한 5개의 금독종과 금쥐를 해석하기 시작합니다. 5개의 도시를 의미하는 것이라고 판단했다는 것인데요. 일단 블레셋 사람들은 언약궤를 뺏은 것 그리고 그에 대한 사과를 표했고 그로 인해 심판을 중단한 것으로 보입니다. 그렇다고 면제는 아니었으며 관계 회복이 일어난 것으로 보이지도 않습니다. 그냥 그들은 외부자 상태로 유지된 것이죠. 뿌리 깊은 선민의식 쩐다 진짜.

 

17. These are the golden tumours that the Philistines returned as a guilt offering to the Lord; one for Ashdod, one for Gaza, one for Ashkelon, one for Gath, one for Ekron, 18 and the golden mice, according to the number of all the cities of the Philistines belonging to the five lords, both fortified cities and unwalled villages. The great stone beside which they set down the ark of the Lord is a witness to this day in the field of Joshua of Beth-shemesh.

5. 들여다 봤다고 죽일 것 까지야

19 And he struck some of the men of Beth-shemesh, because they looked upon the ark of the Lord. He struck seventy men of them, and the people mourned because the Lord had struck the people with a great blow. 20 Then the men of Beth-shemesh said, "Who is able to stand before the Lord, this holy God? And to whom shall he go up away from us?"

 

21. So they sent messengers to the inhabitiants of Kiriath-jearim, saying, "The Philistines have returned the ark of the Lord. Come down and take it up to you."

 

일련의 행사를 마치고 블레셋 사람들은 저절로 돌아온 언약궤가 신기했던지 그걸 또 들여다보게 됩니다. 그런데 그랬다고 다 죽여 버렸습니다. 70명을 죽였다고도 하고 5만 70명을 죽였다고도 하는데요. 미친 거 아닌가 싶습니다. 그런데 어떻게 죽었는지에 대한 언급은 없습니다. 죽인 것인지 죽음을 당했는지도 알 길이 없습니다. 게다가 전쟁에서 패해서 5만 명이 죽은 거나 궤를 들여다 보고 그만큼이 죽은 거나 무슨 차이가 있으려나요. 몇 명이 죽었는지와 상관없이 위험한 물건이었음은 틀림없어 보입니다.

뿌리깊은 선민의식

사무엘상 6장을 보면 핵심주제가 야훼의 신비하고 놀라운 능력에 경이롭다는 것이 아닌 뿌리 깊은 선민 의식이 느껴집니다. 하나님의 거룩함은 누구나 두려워할 수 있지만 오직 선택된 자만이 감당할 수 있다는 것을 강조하는 것 같습니다. 뭔가 자기들만이 신을 담는 그릇이며 자신들만 특별하다는 생각이 들거든요.
