언약궤를 상실한 이스라엘인의 충격이 담긴 사무엘상 4장

사무엘상 4장은 이스라엘이 블레셋과의 전쟁에서 참패하고, 결국 언약궤마저 빼앗기는 비극적인 사건을 담고 있다. 이 장은 엘리 제사장 체제의 종말과 함께, ‘영광이 떠났다’는 상징적 선언을 통해 이스라엘 신정체제의 위기를 드러낸다.

1. 전쟁의 시작과 참패

이스라엘과 블레셋은 에벤에셀과 아벡 사이에서 전투를 벌입니다. 그러나 첫 전투에서 이스라엘은 4천 명이 전사하며 패배를 당합니다. 그 원인을 하나님과의 관계 회복이 아닌 '언약궤를 전쟁터로 가져오면 이길 수 있다'는 미신적 믿음에서 찾게 됩니다. 이스라엘 장로들은 하나님을 경외하기보다는 도구처럼 이용하려 했고, 이 선택은 더 큰 파국을 불러옵니다. 여호수아는 첫 승리를 언약궤로 생쇼를 해서 상대 진영에게 겁을 주고 자국 군대에게는 신앙심을 배가하여 승리에 기여했다면 사무엘 편에서는 단지 부적처럼 맹신한 것이 패배의 원인이 되어준 것입니다.

 

1. And the word of Samuel came to all Israel.

 Now Israel went out to battle against the Philistines. They encamped at Ebenezer, and the Philistines encamped at Aphek. 2 The Philistines drew up in line against Israel, and when the battle spread, Israel was defeated by the Philistines, who killed about four thousand men on the field of battle. 3 And when the troops came to the camp, the elders of Israel said, "Why has the Lord defeated us today before the Philistines? Let us bring the ark of the covenant of the Lord here from Shiloh, that it may come among us and save us from the power of our enemies." 4. So the people sent to Shiloh and brought from there the ark of the covenant of the Lord of hosts, who is enthroned on the cherubim. And the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God.

2. 언약궤 등장

여호수아가 언약궤를 가지고 이겼던 때를 상기하며 이번에도 그 방법을 쓰려고 합니다. 블레셋 사람들도 예전에 언약궤의 명성을 들었던 터라 벌벌 떨었지만요. 이번에는 그 두려움이 오히려 적군의 결속력을 강하게 만들게 합니다. 개인적으로는 언약궤가 핵무기 같은 거라고 여겼는데, 이번에 등장한 것은 그런 의미로 느껴지진 않습니다. 효력을 상실한 것도 있겠지만요.

 

아무튼, 여호수아 시대에는 강력한 신앙의 힘이 발휘되었다면, 이번에는 신앙보다는 언약궤의 힘에 의존하면서 오히려 언약궤에 달려있는 체루빔을 맹신했던 것 같은데요. 이는 언약궤는 단순 네모난 상자에 불과해 보였던 것에 비해 체루빔은 보이는 신성이기 때문에 시각적으로 더 믿음이 갔던 것으로 보입니다.

5 As soon as the ark of the covenant of the Lord came into the camp, all Israel gave a mighty shout, so that the earth resounded. 6. And when the Philistines heard the noise of the shouting, they said, "What does this great shouting in the camp of the Hebrews mean?" And when they learned that the ark of the Lord had come to the camp, 7 the Philistines were afraid, for they said, " A god has come into the camp." ANd they said, " Woe to us! For nothing like this has happened before. 8 Woe to us! Who can deliver us from the power of these mighty gods? These are the gods who struck the Egyptians with every sort of plague in the wilderness. 9 Take courage, and be men, O PHilistines, lest you become slaves to the Hebrews as they have been to you; be men and fight."

 

 10 So the PHIlisties fought, and Israel was defeated, and they fled, every man to his home. AND there was a very great slaughter, for there fell of Israel thirty thousand foot soldiers. 11 And the ark of God was captured, and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, died.

 

그렇게 의기양양하게 언약궤를 들고 갔던 이스라엘 군대는 대패하였고 블레셋 사람들은 승리한 후 언약궤도 뺏어 갑니다. 그리고 엘리의 두 아들 홉니와 비느하스는 죽임을 당하게 됩니다.

3. 엘리 수치스럽게 죽다

전쟁에서 패한 베냐민 사람 하나가 전장에서 달려와 흙이 묻은 찢긴 옷을 보이게 되는데, 고대 근동에서는 이런 모습이 전형적인 슬픔을 표현하는 거였다고 합니다. 그래서 패했다는 말을 하지 않아도 사람들은 전쟁에서 진 것을 알고 있었습니다. 그리고 제사장 엘리는 두 아들은 죽거나 말거나 언약궤만 묻습니다.

 

당연히 성읍 사람 전체가 사라진 언약궤 때문에 대성통록을 하였습니다. 사람들이 시끄럽게 울고 있는데도 엘리는 너무 늙어서 상황파악을 못하고 있었습니다.

 

12. A Man of Benjamin ran from the battle line and came to Shiloh the same day, with his clothes torn and with dirt on his head. 13 When he arrived, ELI was sitting on his seat by the road watching, for his heart trembled for the ark of God. And when the man came into the city and told the news, all the city cried out. 14 When Eli heard the sound of the  outcry, he said, "What is this uproar?" Then the man hurried and came and told Eli. 15 Now Eli was ninety-eight years old and his eyes were set so that he could not see. 16 And the man said to ELi, " I am he who has come from the battle; I fled from the battle today." And he said, "How did it go, my son?" 17 He who brought the news answered and said, "Israel has fled before the Philistines, and there has also been a great defeat among the people. Your two sons also, Hophni and PHInehas, are dead, and the ark of God has been captured."

 

영적 분별력을 상실한 것은 물론 눈과 귀가 어두워서 그냥 산송상 그 자체였습니다. 겨우 궤가 없어졌다는 것을 알아들은 엘리는 충격을 받아 의자에서 넘어져 그대로 목이 부러져서 죽었습니다. 여기서 목이 부러졌다는 것은 수치를 당하거나 심판을 받을 때 자주 등장하는 죽음의 방식이라고는 합니다.

 

 18 As soon as he mentioned the ark of God, Eli fell over backwards from his seat by the side of the gate, and his neck was broken and he died, for the man was old and heavy. He had judged Israel for forty years.

5. 이가봇의 탄생

언약궤는 사라지고 엘리는 죽고, 그런 놀라운 소식에 남편까지 죽었다고 하니 비느하스의 아내는 조기 진통을 겪게 됩니다. 그래서 아들을 낳았지만 아무도 축복하지 않았습니다. 이들은 오로지 언약궤를 잃어버렸다는 생각과 그에 대한 비탄에만 빠져 있었습니다. 그래서 태어난 아기 이름을 이가봇이라고 짓게 됩니다.

 

19 Now his daughter-in-law, the wife of Phinehas, was pregnant, about to give birth. AND WHEN she heard the news that the ark of God was captured, and that her father-in-law and her husband were dead, she bowed and gave birth, for her pains came upon her. 20 And about the time of her death the women attending her said to her, "Do not be afraid, for you have borne a son." But she did not answer or pay attention. 21 ANd she named the child Ichabod, saying, "The glory has departed from Israel!" because the ark of God had been captured and because of her father-in-law and her husband. 22 And she said, "The glory has departed from Israel, for the ark of God had been captured."

 

이가봇의 의미는 영광이 없다, 영광이 떠났다란 뜻으로,  아이의 이름은 한 개인의 상실을 넘어, 이스라엘 전체의 신학적 상태를 요약합니다. 이는 단순한 이름이 아닌 시대적 진단입니다. 이가봇은 아이이자 슬로건이었던 겁니다. 이가봇이란 이름이 왠지 로봇 같이 느껴집니다. 비인간적인 어감도 느껴지는데다 성경에 나온 기존 이름에 비해서 상당히 생소합니다. 어쨌든 희망이 없는 아이를 낳고 말았네요.

사무엘 4장의 충격

언약궤로 승리할 줄 알았는데 3만명이나 잃고 대패한 데다 언약궤마저 뺏기고, 제사장 엘리는 죽고 그의 두 아들도 죽는 등 비극의 정점을 달립니다. 모든 슬픔 중 가장 큰 슬픔과 고통은 이들이 언약궤를 빼앗겼다는 사실입니다. 하지만 이들이 전쟁에서 패한 결정적인 원인은 신앙보다는 언약궤를 부적처럼 여긴 태도 때문이었습니다. 신앙을 수단으로 본 것이죠. 게다가 여호수아라는 걸출한 리더도 없이 전쟁을 강행한 결과로 볼 수 있습니다.
