살기 위해 아이를 바친 한나 사무엘상 1장 이야기

1. 에브라임 사람 엘가나의 두 아내

에브라임 지파의 엘가나란 사람에겐 두 아내가 있었는데 한나와 브닌나 중 한나는 자식이 없었다고 합니다. 고대 사회에 여성에게 출산은 중요했는데 아이를 낳지 못했으니 사회적 수치와 영적 시련으로 고통을 받은 걸로 나옵니다.

 

1. There was a certain man of Ramathaimzophim of the hill country of Ephraim whose name was Elkanah the son of Jeroham, son of Elihu, son of Tohu, son of Zuph, an Ephrathite. 2 He had two wives. The name of one was Hannah, and the name of the other, Peninnah. And Peninnah had children but Hannah had no children.

 

3 Now this man used to go up year by year from his city to worship and to sacrifice to the Lord of hosts at Shiloh, where the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were priests of the Lord. 4. On the day when Elkanah sacrificed, he would give portions to Peninnah his wife and to all her though the Lord had closed her womb. 6 And her rival used to provoke her grievously to irritate her, because the Lord had closed her womb. 7 So it went on year by year. As often as she went up to the house of the Lord, she used to provoke her. Therefore Hannah wept and would not eat. 8 And Elkanah, her husband, said to her, "Hannah, why do you weep? And why do you not eat? And why is your heart sad? Am I not more to you than ten sons?"

2. 한나의 괴로움과 제사

하나님을 위한 예배를 드리고 난 후 한나는 독자적 행동으로 성소로 올라갑니다. 제사장 엘리는 성소 문 곁 의자에 앉아 있었고요. 본래 성소는 일반인에게 절대 금지된 곳입니다. 한나는 문턱에서 흐느끼듯 읖조립니다. 엘리는 그녀가 단지 술에 취해서 그런 줄 알고 언제까지 취해있을 거냐고 묻습니다. 포도주를 끊으라고 말입니다. 그러자 한나는 이렇게 말합니다.

9. After they had eaten and drunk in Shiloh, Hannah rose. Now Eli the pries was sitting on the seat beside the doorpost of the temple of the Lord. 10 She was deeply distressed and prayed to the Lord and wept bitterly. 11 And she vowed a vow and said, "O Lord of hosts, if you will indeed look on the affliction of your servant and remember me and not forget your servant, but will give to your servant a son, then I will give him to the Lord all the days of his life, and no razor shall touch his head."

 

기도하는 한나와 사무엘을 바치는 한나

 

나는 마음이 슬픈 여자입니다. 술이 아니라 내 심정을 여호와께 토로한 것입니다, 라고 합니다. 한나는 자신을 비천한 여종이라고 지칭하면서 겸손한 설명을 합니다. 그러나 엘리는 그에게 하나님이 들어주실것이니 가라고 합니다. 일종의 축복 같지만 제사장은 그런 일을 할 수 없으니 같은 바람을 담은 것 같습니다. 제사장으로서 해줄 수 있는 말은 그렇게 되기를, 이니까요. 왜 자신을 여종이라 낮추는 가 했더니 하나님 앞에서 그리 자신을 낮춘 것 같습니다.

 

 12 As she continued praying before the Lord, Eli observed her mouth. 13 Hannah was speaking in her heart; only her lips moved, and her voice was not heard. Therefore ELI took her to be adrunken woman. 14 And Eli said to her, "How long will you go on being drunk? Put your wine away from you." 15 But Hannah answered, "No, my lord, I am a woman troubled in spirt. I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but I have been pouring out my soul before the Lord. 16 Do not regard your servant as a worthless woman, for all along I have been speaking out of my great anxiety and vexation." 17 Then Eli answered, "Go in peace, and te God of Israel grant your petition that you have made to hem."18 And she said, "Let your servant find favour in your eyes." Then the woman went on her way and ate, and her face was no longer sad.

3. 하나님의 응답과 사무엘의 출생

이후, 한나는 잉태하여 사무엘을 낳게 됩니다. 이 잉태 서사는 야곱의 아내 라헬과 무척 흡사합니다. 라헬은 하나님께 부르짖음으로 원하던 바를 이루었고 한나는 침묵의 서원 기도로 소원이 이루어진 점이 차이가 있을 뿐입니다. 여하튼, 성경에 종종 등장하는 이런 서사는 상당히 위험해 보입니다. 왜냐하면 사이비 종교 교주들이 이를 빌미로 악행을 저지르기 때문입니다. 절망에 빠진 여성, 특히 불임이나 고통 상실에 처한 여성을 위로나 하나님의 뜻이라며 악행을 일삼는 자들이 비일비재하니까요. 이런 것을 여성들은 아는지 모르는지 당하기만 하는 현실이 안타깝습니다. 물론 요즘에는 나아졌다고는 해도 적지 않은 것은 사실이니까요.

 19 They rose early in the morning and worshipped before the Lord, then they went back to their house at Ramah. And Elkanah knew Hannah his wife, and the Lord remembered her. 20 And in due time Hunnah conceived and bore a son, and she called his name Samuel, for she said, "I have asked for him from the Lord."

4. 서원 이행에 대한 내용

사무엘을 낳은 한나는 실로로 예배를 바로 드리러 가지 않고 젖 떼기 전까지는 데리고 있겠다고 하여 남편 엘가나는 그리 하라고 하였습니다.

 

21 The man Elkanah and all his house went up to offer to the Lord the yearly sacrifice and to pay his vow. 22 But Hannah did not go up, for she said to her husband, "As soon as the child is weaned, I will bring him, so that he may appear in the presence of the Lord and dwell there for ever." 23 Elkanah her husband said to her, "Do what seems best to you; wait until you have weaned him; only, may the Lord establish his word." So the woman remained and nursed her son until she weaned him. 24 And when she had weaned him, she took him up with her, along with a three year old bull, an ephah of flour, and a skin of wine, and she brought him to the house of the Lord at Shioh. And the child was young. 25 Then they slaughtered the bull, and they brought the child to Eli. 26 And the said, "Oh, my lord! As you live, my lord, I am the woman who was standing here in your presence, praying to the Lord. 27 For this child I Prayed, and the Lord has granted me my petition that I made to him. 28 Therefore I have lent him to the Lord. As long as he lives, he is lent to the Lord."

 And he worshipped the Lord there.

 

아이가 젖을 떼자 한나는 수송아지 세 마리, 밀가루 한 에바, 포도주 한 가죽부대와 함께 제물로 바칩니다. 그리고 아이 사무엘을 데리고 엘리에게 인도합니다. 엘리에게 이 아이가 서원해서 낳은 아이라고 합니다. 이것을 믿는 자들은 무척 신성한 행위로 볼 수 있을 것 같지만, 문학적 상상력을 동원한 제 입장에서는 뭔가 냄새가 납니다. 마치 제사장 엘리가 한나를 겁탈해서 아이를 낳았고 그 아이를 그렇게 복수하듯 바친 것처럼 비쳐지거든요. 그렇게 힘들게 낳은 아이를 왜 거기다 바칩니까? 당시 왕이 없던 시대에 특히 제사장이 타락한 시대에 엘리란 제사장이 무슨 짓은 못했으려나요. 성막은 이미 도덕적 타락의 중심지로 유명했으니까요. 혹은 엘리가 아니더라도 다른 사람들이 그리 했을 수도 있고요.

 

게다가 사무엘상 2장 22절에는 제사장 엘리의 아들들이 여인들을 성소에서 겁탈하는 장면도 나오고, 엘리는 그것을 모른척 합니다. 부전자전이라고 아들들도 본 것이 있으니 그리 행한 게 아닌가 하는 의구심이 듭니다. 아무튼, 자식의 의지와 상관없이 애들 거기다 맡긴다는 것이 부모로서 할 일인가 싶습니다. 혹자들은 한나가 아들을 위함이 아닌 자신이 살기 위해 아이를 낳은 거라고 하는데요. 그러면 더 이기적인 것 같습니다.

6. 기도한 여자가 아닌 살아남으려는 여자

브닌나는 아이을 낳았고, 그 아이들은 엘가나 집안의 생물학적 미래이자 사회적 힘의 상징이었습니다. 반면 아이를 낳지 못한 한나는 불임이란 이유로 모멸당하고, 예배 등의 제사 자리에서조차 결핍으로 환원되며 기도조차 목 놓아 하지 못했습니다. 제사장이 술취한 여인으로 알았을 정도니까요. 그래서 그녀의 기도는 아이를 낳아 달라고 기도한 것이 아닌 자신을 살아 있게 해달라고 절규한 것입니다.

마지막 마무리

이러한 정황을 보면 한나는 단지 살기 위해 아이를 낳은 것으로 보입니다. 그렇게 낳은 아이를 하나님에게 반납하고 자신은 살아 남은 것이죠. 하나님 입장에서는 꿩 먹고 알 먹은 셈이죠.
