몰락하는 제도와 새로운 질서의 예고 사무엘상 2장

사무엘상 2장은 한 여인의 찬송으로 시작해 이스라엘의 영적 위기를 보여주는 장면으로 전개되며, 결국 하나님께서 새로운 질서를 세우시겠다는 예언으로 마무리됩니다. 겸손한 자를 높이고, 교만한 자를 낮추는 하나님의 공의가 중심 주제입니다.

1. 한나의 찬송

한나는 자신의 기도에 응답하신 하나님께 깊은 감사의 찬송을 드립니다. 이는 단순한 개인의 감사가 아니라, 이스라엘 전체를 향한 신학적 선언입니다. 그런데 그보다 앞서 불임으로 핍박당하고 그렇게 어렵게 아들을 낳았는데, 젖을 떼자마자 아이를 제사장한테 맡기고 하나님을 찬양한다는 게 믿기질 않습니다. 하지만 현실에서도 사이비 교주에게 빠진 사람들 중에는 종종 이런 사람들이 보이긴 합니다.

 

1.And Hannah prayed and said,

"My heart exults in the Lord; my strength is exalted in the Lord, My mouth derides my enemies, because I rejoice in your salvation. 2. "There is none holy like the Lord; there is none besides you; there is no rock like our God. 3 Talk no more so very proudly, let not arrogance come from your mouth; for the Lord is a God of knowledge, and by him actions are weighed. 4 The bows of the mighty are broken, but the feeble bind on strength. 5 Those who were full have hired themselves out for bread, but those who were hungry have ceased to hunger. The barren has norne seven, but she who has many children is forlorn. 6 The Lord kills and brings to life; he brings down to Sheol and raises up. 7 The Lord makes poor and makes rich; he brings low and he exalts. 8 He raises up the poor from the dust; he lifts the needy from the ash heap to make them sit with princes and inherit a seat of honour. For the pillars of the earth are the Lord's and on them he has set the world. 9 "He will guard the feet of his faithful ones, but the wicked shall be cut off in darkness, for not by might shall a man prevail. 10. The adversaries of the Lord shall be broken to pieces; against them he will thunder in heaven. The Lord will judge the ends of the earth; he will give strength to his king and exalt the power of his anointed."

 

1절에서 10절의 주요 구절 중, 여호와는 죽이기도 하고 살리기도 하고 음부에 내리기도 하고 거기서 올리기도 하시는도다, 가난하게도 하고 부하게도 하며 낮추기도 높이기도 한다고 하는데요. 전지전능함을 강조하는 것도 있지만 그렇게 강력하게 믿고 있는 것도 있다고 봅니다. 여기서 인상적인 구절 중 음부에 내린다는 표현을 찾아봤습니다. 더군다나 스올은 천국 지옥 상관없이 죽은 자들이 가는 지하세계 혹은 무덤의 상징적 장소를 의미합니다. 그런 차원에서 무덤이란 의미로 한국에선 음부라고 쓴 모양입니다. 확실한 것은 성경 구약에는 천국과 지옥의 개념은 없고 죽으면 어떤 공간으로, 그러니까 스올이란 공간으로 들어가게 된다는 점입니다.

2. 부패한 제사장과 순전한 아이

엘리의 아들 홉니와 비느하스는 제사장의 직분을 악용하여 백성들의 제물을 탐하고, 회막에서 음행까지 저지릅니다. 이 장면은 단순한 도덕적 타락이 아닌, 영적 권력의 부패를 상징합니다. 반면, 사무엘은 “세마포 에봇을 입고 여호와 앞에서 섬기더라”는 짧은 구절로 그의 순전한 성품을 보여줍니다. 이 대조는 하나님께서 누구를 사용하실지를 명확히 드러냅니다.

 

11. Then Elkanah went home to Ramah. And the boy ministered to the Lord in the presence of Eli the priest.

 

12 Now the sons of Eli were worthless men. They did not know the Lord. 13 The custom of the priests with the people was that when any man offered sacrifice, the priest's servant would come, while the meat was boiling, with a three-pronged fork in his hand, 14 and he would thrust it into the pan or kettle or cauldron or pot. All that the fork brought up the priest would take for himself. This is what they did at Shiloh to all the Israaelites who came there. 15 Moreover, before the fat was burned, the priest's servant would come and say to the man who was sacrificing, "Give meat for the priest to roast, for he will not accept boiled meat from you but only raw." 16 ANd if the man said tohim, "Let them burn the fat first, and then take as much as you wish." he would say, "No, you must give it the sin of the young men was very great in offering of the Lord with contempt.

18 Samuel was ministering before the Lord, a boy clothed with a linen ephod. 19 And his mother used to make for him a little robe and take it to him each year when she went up with her husband to offer the yearly sacrifice. 20 Then Eli would bless Elkanah and his wife, this woman for the petition she asked of the Lord." So then they would return to their home.

  21 Indeed the Lord visited Hannah, and she conceived and bore three sons and two daughters. And the young man Samuel grew in the presence of the Lord.

 

순간 기도와 응답의 역전 구조가 보입니다. 한나는 지극히 개인적인 바람으로 기도를 올렸고 그렇게 아이를 낳았는데, 갑자기 한나는 그걸 하나님께 바치고 하나님은 사무엘을 통해 새로운 역사를 쓰려 합니다. 하나님이 너무 날로 먹으려고 하는 거 아닌가 싶기도 합니다. 아니면 그냥 인간이 자신들의 역사를 합리화하려고 꿰맞춘 것으로 보입니다.

3. 예언자적 심판: 엘리 가문의 몰락

하나님의 사람이 엘리에게 나타나, 그의 가문이 더는 제사장직을 이어갈 수 없을 것이라 선언합니다. 이는 단순한 가문 내 징벌이 아니라, 시대의 전환 선언입니다. 현대 종교인 자제들에서도 어렵지 않게 발견할 수 있는 타락을 다룬 것 같은데요. 여기서도 엘리 제사장의 두 아들은 타락이 극을 달립니다. 성소에서 성폭행을 자행하는 패륜적이고 양아치같은 쓰레기 짓을 했음에도 엘리는 아들들의 악행을 짐짓 눈감아 주었습니다. 

 

22. Now Eli was very old, and he kept hearing all that his sons were doing to all Israel, and how they lay with the women who were serving at the entrance to the tent of meeting. 23 And he said to them, "Why do you do such things? For I Hear of your evil dealings from all the people. 14 No, my sons; it is not a good report that I hear the people of the Lord spreading abroad. 25 If someone sins against a man, God will mediate for him, but if someone sins against the Lord, who can intercede for him?" But they would not listen to the voice of their father, for it was the will of the Lord to put them to death.

 

  26 Not the young man Samuel continued to grow both in stature and in favour with the Lord and also with man.

4. 시대의 전환 선언

하나님이 참신한 어린 사무엘을 보고 마음이 동하였던 것인지 예비되었던 것인지, 하나님의 사람이 엘리에게 나타나 너는 더는 제사장직을 이어갈 수 없을 거라고 선언합니다. 이는 단순 선언을 넘어 시대의 전환을 선언한 것입니다. 뭐 이 정도까지 거창한가 싶었습니다. 엘리가 그렇게 대단한 사람이었나, 실제 그가 대단했다기보다 성소 최고 제사장을 맡고 있었고 당시 실로는 이스라엘의 종교 중심지였습니다. 법궤가 아직 그곳 실로에 있었고 엘리가 그 법궤를 관리하는 인물이었으니 책임이 막중했던 겁니다. 그런데 엘리의 방관이나 그의 아들들의 몹쓸 짓을 하나님이 그냥 보아 넘기질 못한 것이죠. 한마디로 엘리는 역사에서 퇴장하는 인물이었고 사무엘은 새 질서를 여는 인물인 것입니다.

 

27. And there came a man of God to Eli and said to him, "Thus the Lord has said, 'Did I indeed reveal myself to the house of your father when they were in Egypt jubject to the house of pharaoh? 28 Did I choose him out of all the tirbes of Israel to be my priest, to go up to my altar, to burn incense, to wear an ephod before me? I gave to the house of your father all my offerings by fire from the people of Israel. 29 Why then do you scorn my sacrifices and my offering that I commanded, and honour your sons above me by fattening yourselves on the choicest parts of every offering of my people Israel?" 30 Therefore the Lord, the God of Israel, declares: 'I promised that your house and the house of your father should go in and out before me for ever, ' but now the Lord declares: 'Far be it from me, for those wo honour me I will honour, and those who despise me shall be lightly esteemed. 31 Behold, the days are coming when I will cut off your strength and the strength of your father's house, so that there will not be an old man in your house. 32 Then in distress you will look with envious eye on all the prosperity that shall be bestowed on Israel, and there shall not be an old man in your house for ever. 33 The only one of you whom I shall not cut off from my altar shall be spared to weep his eyes out to grieve his heart, and all the descendants of your house shall die by the sword of men. 34 And this that shall come upon your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, shall be the sign to you: bo anointed for ever. both of them shall die on the same day. 35 And I will raise up for myself a faithful priest, who shall do according to what is in my heart and in my mind. AND I WILL build him a sure house, and he shall go in and out before my anointed for ever. 36 And everyone who is left in your house shall come to implore him for a piece of silver or a loaf of bread and shall say, "Please put me in one of the priests' places, that I may eat a morsel of bread.""

5. 노인이 없게 하리라

사무엘상 2장의 핵심 메시지는 세대 교체로 보입니다. 구태한 늙은 제사장을 없애고 신선한 사무엘을 새로운 제사장으로 세우기 위한 빌드업인 것이죠. 이는 하나님의 의지도 들어갑니다. 다음 세대에 이름을 남기지 못하게 노인이 없게 하리라는 단호한 벌을 내린 것 같습니다. 특히 신은 엘리 지파의 몰락을 의미했는데요. 이는 엘리 지파뿐만이 아닌 레위 지파의 몰락도 포함된 것을 보입니다. 그리고 이보다 더 자세하게 파헤치면 레위 전체의 붕괴가 아닌 아론의 두 분파 중 하나가 폐위된 사건으로 볼 수 있습니다. 그러니까 이트마르 계열의 엘리는 몰락하고 경쟁하던 엘르아살 계열이 사독이 다시 대제사장직을 장악하게 됩니다.

사무엘의 미래

뒷부분에 그에 관한 얘기가 더 나올 것 같지만, 사무엘은 개인적으로 보면 경건하고 청렴합니다. 하지만 그는 새로운 권력을 정당화하기 위해 선택된 도구이자 중간 관리자입니다.

• 엘리의 몰락을 목격하고,
• 사울을 왕으로 세웠다가 폐위시키고,
• 다윗에게 기름 부으며 다음 체제를 열어줍니다.

그러나 정작 자신은 계승되지 못하고 엘리처럼 그의 아들들도 타락했고, 그는 하나님의 뜻을 운반했지만, 끝내 권력의 바깥에 머무른 인물입니다. 아무리 생각해도 레위지파에게 이용당한 도구로 느껴집니다.
