퀴퀘그의 이상한 식습관 모비딕 챕터 5

모비딕 챕터 5 블랙퍼스트 편은 아침 식사 중 퀴퀘그의 이상한 식사 문화에 관한 이야기가 나옵니다. 지극히 무례한 행위지만 워낙 특이한 퀴퀘그라서 넘어간 것 같은데요. 이 식인종 퀴퀘그는 자신의 작살로 피가 뚝뚝 떨어지는 스테이크에만 눈독 들이고 먹고, 손도끼 모양의 파이프로 담배를 피운 내용입니다.

모비딕 챕터 5 아침식사를 하러 가는 길에 등장한 탐험가 이야기

 

 

There reflections just here are occasioned by the circumstance that after we were all seated at the table, and I was preparing to hear some good stories about whaling; to my no small surprise nearly every man maintained a profound silence.

 

 

 

And not only that, but they looked embarrassed. Yes, here were a set of sea-dogs, many of whom without the slightest bashfulness had boarded great whales on the high seas- entire strangers to them- and duelled them dead without winking; and yet, here they sat a social breakfast table- all of the same calling, all of kindred tastes- looking round as sheep- ishly at each other as though they had never been out of sight of some sheepfold among the Green Mountains. A curious sight; these bashful bears, these timid warrior whalemen!

 

식탁에 우리가 앉았을 때 이스마엘은 고래잡이에 관한 좋은 이야기 그러니까 무용담 같은 것을 들을 것을 준비하고 있었지만 사람들은 놀라울 정도로 조용했습니다. 그뿐만 아니라 그들은 다소 낯을 가리거나 부끄러워하는 눈치였습니다. 여기서 sea dogs가 사나운 바다의 개들을 의미하는 것인지 진짜 물개를 의미하는지는 모르겠지만요. 바다의 물개들이 육지의 식탁에 앉았을 때는 다소 뻘쭘해 보였던 걸까요? 이들은 마치 수줍은 곰들 혹은 겁먹은 고래잡이들처럼 보였다는 것 같군요.

 

 

 

 

 퀴퀘그의 태도

 

 

But as for Queequeg- why, Queequeg sat there among them-at the head of the table, too, it so chanced; as cool as an icicle. To be sure I cannot say much for his breeding. His greatest admirer could not have cordially justified his bringing his harpoon into breakfast with him, and using it there without ceremony; reaching over the table with it, to the imminent jeopardy of many heads, and grappling the beefsteaks towards him. But that was certainly very coolly done by him, and every one knows that in most people's estimation, to do anything coolly is to do it genteelly.

 

 

 

그 와중에도 퀴퀘그는 식탁의 상석에 앉아 서늘한 기운을 풍겼다고 하는데요. 뭔가 위엄이 있어 보였던 걸까요? 확실히 그의 밥상머리 교육 혹은 가정교육이나 매너에  관해서는 말할 수 없지만 문제가 있어 보였나 봅니다. 그러나 어떤 이질감으로 인해 뭔가 형편없다기보다 다름을 인정한 뉘앙스입니다.

 

하지만 그럼에도 이스마엘의 눈에 그가 식탁에 포크가 아닌 작살을 들고 스테이크를 자기 쪽으로 끌어당기는 모습은 무례한 영역에 가까웠으며 그를 아무리 숭배하는 자라고 해도 용납할 수 없을 것 같은데 식탁의 사람들은 그의 그런 모습에 익숙했던 것인지 오히려 젠틀하다고 한 것인지 쿨한 그의 태도를 인정한 모습이 이스마엘 눈에는 낯설게 보였던 것 같습니다.

We all not speak of all Queequeg's peculiarities here; how he eschewed coffee and hot rolls, and applied his undivided attention to beefsteaks, done rare. Enough, that when breakfast was over he withdrew like the rest into the public room, lighted his tomahawkpipe, and was sitting there quietly digesting and smoking with his inseparable hat on, when I wallied out for a stroll.

 

 

우리는 여기서 퀴퀘그의 태도에 대해서는 아무도 말하지 않았습니다. 어떻게 커피나 핫롤을 피하고 피가 뚝뚝 떨어지는 스테이크에만 눈이 가는 모습만 봐도 그가 어떤 사람인지 짐작이 간다는 것인지는 모르겠지만요. 그는 거기에 더해 식사 후 손도끼 모양의 파이프로 담배를 피우고 분리할 수 없는 모자, 그러니까 머리에도 문신이 가득하다는 거였겠죠? 그렇게 그는 식후 담배를 피우고 있었고 이스마엘은 산책을 하려고 일어선 상황입니다.
