뉴베드포드의 부유함이 부러워 보이는 이스마엘 모비딕 챕터 6 후반

모비딕 챕터 6은 거리에 관한 묘사입니다. 현란한 거리에 퀴퀘그는 더 특별한 스타일을 보여주었고 뉴베드포드는 매우 부유하고 아름다운 지역이라고 합니다. 그리고 모두 고래 덕분에 부자가 된 것이겠죠? 이스마엘의 선망이 느껴지는 구절이었습니다.

But think not that this famous town has only harpooneers, cannibals, and bumpkins to show her visitors. Not at all. Still New Bedford is a queer place. Had it not been for us whalemen, that tract of land would this day perhaps have been in as howling condition as the coast of Labrador. As it is, parts of her back country are enough to frighten one, they look so bony.

 

 

 

 

The town itself is perhaps the dearest place to live in, in all New England. It is a land of oil, true enough: but not like Canaan; a land, also , of corn and wine. The streets do not run with milk; nor in the spring-time do they pave them with fresh eggs. Yet, in spite of this, nowhere in all America will you find more patrician-like houses; parks and gardens more opulent, than in New Bedford. Whence came they? how planted upon this once scraggy scoria of a country?

 

 

 

이스마엘은 당시 번화한 뉴베드포드에 관해 이야기하고 있습니다. 가나안처럼 젖과 꿀이 흐르는 지역은 아니지만 실제 기름이 흐르고 상당히 번영했음을 느낄 수 있었는데요. 1800년데 뉴베드포드는 미국 배사추세츠주에 위치한 곳으로 고래 사냥 및 가공업으로 유명한 곳입니다. 고래사냥이 워낙 흥했던 사업이었고 미국의 경제적 번영을 이끌 정도였으니 북적일 수밖에요. 70년대 강원도 묵호항이 서울보다 발전하였다고 하였는데 아마 그런 분위기였겠죠?

 

 

 다양한 문화가 모인 곳

 

 Go and gaze upon the iron emblematical harpoons round yonder lofty mansion, and your question will be answered. Yes; all these brave houses and flowery gardens came from the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian oceans. One and all, they were harpooned and dragged up hither from the bottom of the sea. Can Herr Alexander perform a feat like that?

 

이곳이 번영한 이유, 그리고 멋지고 부티나는 저택 등 모두 작살잡이로 돈을 벌었다는 것을 말하고 싶은가 봅니다. 이스마엘의 야망이 느껴질 정도입니다. 시선이 그렇게 그런 곳에 머문다는 것이니까요.

 

 

 

 사향 냄새 풍기는 세일럼

 

In New Bedford, fathers, they say, give whales for dowers to their daughters, and portion off their nieces with a few porpoises a-piece. You must go to New Bedford to see a brilliant wedding; for, they say, they have reservoirs of oil in every house, and every night recklessly burn their lengths in spermaceti candles.

 

 

 

양초를 아낌없이 태우는 이 지역은 딸에게 결혼 지참금 대신 고래를 주고 조카들에게도 고래 살점인지 부속물인지 암튼 넉넉하게 고래 관련한 것을 주나 봅니다. 상당히 풍요하다는 것을 의미하는 거겠죠? 

 

 In summer time, the town is sweet to see; full of fine maples long avenues of green and gold. And in August, high in air, the beautiful and bountiful horse-chestnuts, candelabra- wise, proffer the passer-by their tapering upright cones of congregated blossoms. So omnipotent is art; which in many a district of New Bedford has superinduced bright terraces of flowers upon the barren refuse rocks thrown aside at creation's final day.

 

여름이면 골드와 그린, 풍요가 넘치고 화려한 꽃밭 등 이루 말할 수 없는 아름다움의 극치를 보여주는 것 같습니다.

 

 

 

 And the women of New Bedford, they bloom like their own red roses. But roses only bloom in summer; whereas the fine carnation of their cheeks is perennial as sunlight in the seventh heavens. Elsewhere match that bloom of theirs, ye cannot, save in Salem, where they tell me the young girls breathe such musk, their sailor sweethearts smell miles off shore, as though they were drawing nigh the odorous Moluccas instead of the Puritanic sands.

 

그리고 이곳의 여성들은 장미처럼 카네이션처럼 뺨에 장밋빛을 뿜는다고 하였는데, 싱그러운 장미처럼 아름답다고 표현한 것인지 수줍은 소녀처럼 뺨이 발그레하다고 한 것인지 모르겠습니다. 이미지만큼은 싱그럽고 혈색이 넘쳐 보이는데요. 그러면서 예외는 있다고 합니다. 이 지역 세일럼에 사는 여성만큼은 예외라고 합니다. 이 여성들은 멀리서도 사향 냄새를 풍긴다고 하는데요 이들의 애인인 선원들은 멀리서도 이들의 사향 냄새를 맡을 수 있다고 하고 이는 청교도적 문화와는 대비된다는 뉘앙스입니다.

 

 

 

세일럼은 1600년대 마녀 사냥을 당한 장소로도 유명합니다. 예쁜 여자가 많았던 것인지 음란한 지역이었던 것인지는 모르겠으나 그만큼 섹슈얼한 매력이 넘치다는 것인지는 모르겠으나 보수적인 청교사회와 대조되는 지역이었나 봅니다. 좀 찾아봐야겠네요.
