야만인과 함께 산책길에 나선 모비딕 챕터 6장 전반부

모비딕 챕터 6장은 이스마엘이 야만인 퀴퀘그와 함께 부둣가를 산책하면서 낯선 모습과 낯선 관습을 다루고 있습니다. 뭔가 같이 다니기 챙피할 것만 같은 특이한 복장의 그런 느낌이 연상되네요.

 

 

 

뉴 베드포드 산책

 

 

 

If I had been astonished at first catching a glimpse of so outlandish an individual as Queequeg circulating among the polite society of a civilized town, that astonishment soon departed upon taking my first daylight stroll through the streets of New Bedford.

 

 

부두 근처의

 

In thoroughfares nigh the docks, any considerable seaport will frequently offer to view the queerest looking nondescripts from foreign parts. Even Broadway and Chestnut streets, Mediterranean mariners will sometimes jostle the affrighted ladies. Regent Street is not unknown to Lascars and Malays; and at Bombay, in the Apollo Green, live Yankees have often scared the natives. But New Bedford beats all Water Street and Wapping. In these last-mentioned haunts you see only sailors; but in New Bedford, actual cannibals stand chatting at street corners; savages outright; many of whom yet carry on their bones unholy flesh. It makes a stranger stare.

 

 

 

외모도 습성도 이상한 퀴퀘그와 뉴베드포드의 씨포트 즉 부두 근처를 산책하면서, 가뜩이나 소위 뱃사람들은 일반 사람들에 비해서 거칠고 튀는 행동을 하기 마련이죠. 그런 와중에서 퀴퀘그는 아무것도 하지 않아도 기이하게 보였을 것이 분명해 보이지 않나요? 이스마엘은 자신의 룸메이트와 산책하면서 어떤 편견을 더 갖게 된 것인지 호감을 갖게 된 것인지는 모르겠습니다. 

 

 

 

 다양한 군상

 

But, besides the Feegeeans, Tongatobooarrs, Erromanggoans, Pannagians, and Brighggians, and, besides the wild specimens of the whaling-craft which unheeded reed about the streets, you will see other sights still more curious, certainly more comical. There weekly arrive in this town scores of green Vermonters and New Hampshire men, all athirst for gain and glory in the fishery.

 

They are mostly young, of stalwart frames; fellows who have felled forests, and now seek to drop the axe and snatch the whale-lance.Many are as green as the Green Mountains whence they came. In some things you would think them but a few hours old. Look there! that chap strutting round the corner. He wears a beaver hat ad swallow-tailed coat, girdled with a sailor-belt and a sheath-knife. Here comes another with a sou'- wester ad a bombazine cloak.

 

 

 

이스마엘은 또 표현의 유난을 떨고 있습니다. 다양한 인종의 사람들을 나열하며, 백인 사회 전통을 이루는 패기와 야망 넘치는 뉴헴프셔나 버몬트에서 온 젊은 청년들이 영업적 이익을 위해 몰려있는 이곳에, 그러니까 각양각색의 사람들 중에서도 퀴퀘그는 단연코 돋보이는 존재였겠죠. 복장도 그렇고 말입니다. 

 

 

 시골 댄디와 서울 댄디의 차이

 

No town-bred dandy will compare with a country-bred one- I mean a downright bumpkin dandy- a fellow that, in the dog-days, will mow his two acres in buckskin gloves for fear of tanning his hands. Now when a country dandy like this takes it into his head to make a distinguished reputation ,and joins the great whale-fishery, you should see the comical things he does upon reaching the seaport. 

 

 

In bespeaking his sea-outfit, he orders bell-buttons to his waistcoats; straps to his canvas trowsers. Ah, poor Hay-Seed! how bitterly will burst those straps in the first howling gale, when thou art driven, straps , buttons, and all, down the throat of the tempest.

 

예상했듯이 아무리 멋을 내도 세련된 도시인의 멋과 문명이 덜 발달한 곳에서 온 사람들의 멋 부리는 방식은 차이가 있을 겁니다. 그것도 퀴퀘그처럼 야만인에 가까운 사람은 더욱 코믹스럽게 보였던 거겠죠. 이스마엘은 그의 남다른 복장에 대해 지속적인 묘사를 하고 있습니다.
