태양을 멈추게 한 전무후무한 기록 여호수아 10장

여호수아 10장은 꾀를 내어 이스라엘과 화친을 맺은 기브온을 다른 연합국이 공격하려는 내용입니다. 이에 여호수아는 군대를 보내고 하나님께 기도하여 승리하게 되는데요. 작은 언약도 소중히 여기며 하나님이 약속을 지킨다는 뭐 그런 내용입니다. 1절부터 15절까지 내용입니다.

 

아도니세덱의 기브온 도시 공격 계획

1 As soon as Adoni-zedek, king of Jerusalem, heard how Joshua had captured Ai and had devoted it to destruction, doing to Ai and its king as he had done to of Gibeon had made peace with Israel and were among them, 2 he feared greatly, because Gibeon was a great city, like one of the royal cities, and because it was greater than Ai, and all its men were warriors. 3 So Adoni-zedek king of Jerusalem sent to Hoham king of Hebron, to Piram king of Jarmuth, to Japhia king of Lachish, and to Debir king of Eglon, saying, 4 "Come up to me and help me, and let us strike Gibeon. For it has made peace with Joshua and with the people of Israel." 5 Then the five kings of the Amorites, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, and the king of Eglon, gathered their forces and went up with all their armies and encamped against Gibeon and made war against it.

 

 

기브온의 꾀로 이스라엘과 화친을 맺었다는 사실을 들은 예루살렘 왕 아도니세덱은 위협을 느끼고 남방의 왕들을 소집하여 연합합니다. 그리고 기브온을 공격하기로 합니다.  아도니세덱와 멜기세덱을 비교한 글을 읽어 보시면 이해에 도움이 될 것 같습니다. 그런데 왜 기브온을 공격하려고 한 걸까요? 기브온은 강력한 도시였습니다. 단순한 작은 도시가 아닌 군사적으로 요새 같은 곳이었는데 이런 도시가 이스라엘과 손을 잡았다는 것은 주변 왕국들에겐 엄청난 위협으로 작용했을 겁니다. 게다가 가나안 연합국 중 하나였는데 가나안 왕들과 싸우지 않고 이스라엘과 손을 잡은 배신자였기 때문입니다. 아도니세덱은 이에 본보기로 응징을 하려 한 것입니다.

 기브온을 도와주는 이스라엘

 6. And the men of Gibeon sent to Joshua at the camp in Gilgal, saying, "Do not relax your hand from your servants. Come up to us quickly and save us and help us, for all the kings of the Amorites who dwell in the hill country are gathered against us." 7 So Joshua went up from Gilgal, he and all the people of war with him, and all the mighty men of valour. 8 And the Lord said to Joshua, "Do not fear them, for I have given them into your hands. Not a man of them shall stand before you." 9 So Joshua came upon them suddenly, having marched up all night from Gilgal. 10 And the Lord threw them into a panic before Israel, who struck them with a great blow at Gibeon and chased them by the way of the ascent of Beth-horon and struck them as far as Azekah and Makkedah. 11 And as they fled before Israel, while they were going down the ascent of Beth-horon, the Lord threw down large stones from heaven on them as far as Azekah, and they died. There were more who died because of the hailstones than the sons of Israel killed with the sword.

 

 

기브온의 신의 한수로 여호수아는 기브온을 도와 적들을 막아 줍니다. 이런 일련의 상황을 보면서 이승만 대통령이 오버랩되는 순간입니다. 한편으로 여호수아가 알면서도 군사 전략적 이득을 보기 위애 짐짓 당한척 언약을 맺은 건 아닌가 싶기도 하네요. 

 

 태양이 멈춘 날

 

12 At that time Joshua spoke to the Lord in the day when the Lord gave the Amorites over to the sons of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel, "Sun, stand at Gibeon, and moon, in the Valley of Aijalon."  13 And the sun stood still, and the moon stopped, until the nation took vengeance on their enemies.

 

Is this not written in the Book of Jashar? The sun stopped in the midst of heaven and did not urry to set for about a whole day. 14 There has been no day like it before or since, when the Lord heeded the voice of a man, for the Lord fought for Israel.

 

  15 So Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to the camp at Gilgal.

 

 

태양이 하루종일 중천에 머물렀다는 것은 해가 지지 않았다는 것인데 이게 무슨 일인가요? 태양이 멈췄다는 것은 지구 자전이 멈췄다는 것인데 이건 대재앙이잖아요. 그런데 일부 고대 문명 기록에선 이상하게 해가 멈춘 듯 길어졌다, 어두워졌다 등의 얘기가 나오긴 하는데요. 여기는 그냥 비유적 표현이었나 싶기도 하고요. 13절은 고대 히브리 시로 알려진 문헌이라고 하는데요. 고대 전쟁 기록은 종종 영웅적, 시적인 과장 표현을 쓰곤 하였습니다. 하늘이 멈췄다는 전쟁이 하루 종일 계속될 정도로 치열했다는 상징, 그리고 온 땅이 열렸다는 실제 지진이 아닌 전쟁의 격렬함을 강조하는 식으로 태양이 멈췄다는 하나님께서 전쟁의 시간을 확장시킨 것 만큼 완전한 승리를 주셨다는 의미로 쓰인 것인 줄도 모릅니다. 뭔가 열중할 때 시간이 멈춘 것 같고 뭐 그런 느낌이 있잖아요. 

 

이 사건이 의미하는 것은 여호수아가 기브온과의 약속을 지키기 위해 전력을 다한 것, 그러면서 하나님께 간절히 기도를 올렸고 하나님은 기도에 응답한 것입니다. 그리고 태양이 멈췄다 같은 이야기는 성경 전체에서 거의 나온 적이 없습니다. 그야말로 전무후무한 사건인 것입니다. 오직 한번 여호수아 10장 14절에 나왔다는 것이 가장 큰 의미가 있어 보입니다.
