가나안 북부도 점령한 여호수아 11장

가나안 남부를 완전히 장악하고 가나안 지역 왕들과 연합해서 북부를 상대로 승리를 거두는 내용의 여호수아 11장입니다. 여기서 중요한 것은 전략이나 힘의 승리보다 하나님의 말씀대로 순종한 것이 결국 땅을 얻는다라는 메시지라고 하는데 너무 억지 같습니다.

 

 북방과의 전쟁

1. When Jabin, king of Hazor, heard of this, he sent to Jobab king of Madon, and to the king of Shimron, and to the king of Achshaph, 2 and to the kings who were in the northern himm country, and in the Arabah south of Chinneroth, and in the lowland, and in Naphoth-dor on the west, 3 to the Canaanites in the east and the west, the Amorites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, and the Jebusites in the hill country, AND THE Hivites under Hermon in the land of Mizpah. 4 And they came out with all their troops, a great horde, in number like the sand that is on the seashore, with very many horses and chariots. 5 And all these kings joined their forces and came and encamped together at the waters of Merom to fight against Israel.

 

 

가나안 남부의 왕들과 성읍을 초토화시켰다는 소식을 들은 북부는 초긴장 모드로 돌입합니다. 하솔의 왕 야빈이 주축이 되어 북부 지역의 여러 왕들과 부족들, 마돈의 왕 요밥, 시므론 왕, 악삽 왕을 호출합니다. 그밖에 지역 왕들 및 부족장들을 모았더니 연합군의 규모는 매우 커졌습니다. 이 연합군은 이스라엘과 전쟁을 위해 메롬 물 가에 집결하여 진을 쳤습니다. 

 

6 And the Lord said to Joshua, "Do not be afraid of them, for tomorrow at this time I will give over all of them, slain, to Israel. You shall hamstring their horse and burn their chariots with fire." 7 So Joshua and all his warriors came suddenly against them by the waters of Merom and fell upon them. 8 And the LORD gave them into the hand of Israel, who struck them and chased them as far as Great Sidon and Misrephoth-maim, and eastwards as far as the Valley of Mizpeh. And they struck them until he left none remaining. 9 And Joshua did to them just as the Lord said to him: he hamstrung their horses and burned their chariots with fire. 

 

 

정정당당하게 붙으면 큰일이라도 나는지, 이스라엘 군대는 하나님의 명령이라면서 기습 공격을 하여 적들을 몰살합니다. 아주 큰 승리를 했습니다. 이것에 대해 이의를 제기하면 신학자들은 하나님이 허락하신 전술적 지혜라며 실드를 칩니다. 하긴 전쟁에서 기습이나 매복은 가장 효과적인 군사적 전략이기에 뭐라고 할 것은 아니라고 봅니다. 이런 일련의 정황들을 보면 이스라엘 민족은 힘센 민족이라기보다 정치적. 전략적으로 앞선 세련된 신문명이라고 볼 수 있을 것 같습니다. 

 

 

 하솔의 파괴

10 And Joshua turned back at that time and captured Hazor and struck its king with the sword, for Hazor and struck its king with the sword, for Hazor formerly was the head of all those kingdoms. 11 And they struck with the sword all who were in it, devoting them to destruction, there was none left that breathed. And he burned Hazor with fire. 12 And all the cities of those kings, and all their kings, Joshua captured, and struck tem with the edge of the sword, devoting them to destruction, just as Moses the servant of the Lord had commanded. 13 But none of the cities that stood on mounds did Israel burael burn, except Hazpr alone' that Joshua burned. 14 And all the spoil of these cities and the livestock, the people of Israel took for their plunder. But every man they struck with the edge of the sword until they had destroyed them, and they did not leave any who breathed. 15 Just as the Lord had commanded Moses his servant, so Moses commanded Joshua, and so Joshua did. He left noting undone of all that the Lord had commanded Moses.

 

여호수아는 연합군의 중심지였던 하솔로 돌아와 왕을 죽이고 도시를 불태웠습니다. 그리고 다른 왕국도 정복하고 왕들을 죽입니다. 가축과 물자는 탈취하고 사람들은 모두 죽였습니다. 이렇게 잔인하게 학살을 해놓고서 이 모든 것은 하나님의 명령이었다고 합니다. 

 

 

 팍스 이스라엘 도래

16. So Joshua took all that land, the hill country and all the Negeb and all the land of Goshen and the lowland and the Arabah and the hill country of Israel and its lowland 17 from Mount Halak, which rises towards Seir, as far as Baal-gad in the Valley of Lebanon below Mount Halak, which rises towards Seir, as far as Baal-gad in the Valley of Lebanon below Mount Hermon. And he captured all their kings and struck them and put them to death. 18 Joshua made war for a long time with all those kings. 19 THere was not a city that made peace with the people of Israel except the Hivites, the inhabitants of Gibeon. They took them all in battle. 20 For it was the Lord's doing to harden their hearts that they should come against Israel in battle, in order that they should be devoted to destruction and should receive no mercy but be destroyed, just as the Lord commanded Moses.

 

21 And Joshua came at that time and cut off the Anakim from the hill country, from Hebron, from Debir, from Anab, and from all the hill country of Israel. Joshua devoted them to destruction with their cities. 22 There was none of the Anakim left in the land of the people of Israel. Only in Gaza, in Gath, and in Ashdod did some remain. 23 So Joshua took the whole land, according to all that the Lord had spoken to Moses. And Joshua gave it for an inheritance to Israel according to their tribal allotments. And the land had rest from war.

 

내용은 더 볼 것도 없이 이스라엘은 하나님의 도움으로 가나안 북부 지역도 완전히 장악했다는 것 같습니다. 그중에서 인상적인 것은 22절에서 아낙 사람들, 그러니까 거인족을 내쫓았다고 하는데요. 왕좌의 게임에서처럼 산악 지역에 살았던 것 같은데 죽이지는 못하고 내쫓았다고 했으니 지속해서 어딘가에는 은닉해서 살고 있었을 것 같습니다. 다윗 시대까지도 레거시 같은 존재들로 남았다고 하네요.
