우연처럼 보이는 운명으로 향한 사울의 여정 사무엘상 9장

사무엘상 9장은 사울이 이스라엘의 첫 번째 왕으로 하나님의 섭리 안에 부름받는 과정을 다룬, 극적이면서도 섬세한 운명의 서사입니다.
겉으로는 단순히 나귀를 찾는 이야기지만, 실제로는 왕이 탄생하는 하늘의 설계도가 펼쳐지는 장면입니다.

1. 사울의 소개

사무엘상 9장은 베냐민 지파 기스의 아들 사울이 소개됩니다. 이스라엘 백성들의 요구로 초대 왕이 되는 인물입니다. 사울에 대한 설명으로 이스라엘 자손 중에 외모가 준수했던 모양입니다. 키가 크고 준수했는데 그의 키는 일반 모든 백성보다 어깨 위만큼이나 더 컸다고 합니다. 이런 것을 보면 옛사람들은 유독 키에 민감했던 것 같습니다. 미의 기준을 키에 두고 있는 것 같거든요.

 

1. There was a man of Benjamin whose name was Kish, the son of Abiel, son of Zeror, son of Becorath, son of Aphiah, a Benjaminite, a man of wealth. 2 And he had a son whose name was not a man among the people of Israel more handsome than he. From his shoulders upwards he was taller than any of the people.

 

야곱의 막내 아들 베냐민을 필두로 한 베냐민 지파는 뿌리 깊은 전통적인 족보를 가진 가문이기는 하지만 이스라엘 지파 중 가장 약하고 상처 입은 지파입니다. 그러나 여기서 기스의 아들 전사적 명예, 사회적 권위, 경제적 영향력을 모두 가진, 그러니까 외형적으로 왕의 조건을 정당하게 갖춘 인물임을 강조하는 듯합니다. 그러나 베냐민 지파 중 기스라는 강한 인물의 자손이라고 해서 뿌리가 튼튼하다고 볼 수는 없었습니다. 그리고 이것이 그의 불안정한 정체성을 암시하기도 합니다. 

 

그리고 겉보기엔 그래도 완벽한 왕의 모습을 갖추었지만 훗날 내면적 불안정, 신앙적 갈등 및 자아 분열과 극명한 대비를 이루게 됩니다.

 

 3.Now the donkeys of Kish, Sauls father, were lost. So Kish said to Saul his son, "Take one of the young men with you, and arise, go and look for the donkeys." 4. And he passed through the hill country of Ephraim and passed through the land of Shalishah, but they did not find them. AND they passed through the land of Shaalim, but they were not there. Then they passed through the land of Benjamin, but did not find them.

 

인간이 왕을 정하기로 선택한 이상 하나님은 마뜩찮았지만 허락을 하였고 그에게 길을 준비해 주십니다. 집안에서 암나귀를 잃어버리자 아버지 기스가 사울에게 종을 데리고 나귀를 찾아오라고 시킵니다. 당시 나귀는 귀한 재산이자 이동 수단 그리고 부의 상징이었기에 집안에서 큰 일을 맡은 것이 분명합니다. 그리고 사울은 암나귀들을 찾아 나서는데 목적 없는 여정을 떠나게 됩니다.

2. 우연처럼 보이는 운명

시종 한명을 데리고 사울은 암나귀를 찾아 떠납니다. 그러나 숲이라는 성읍에 이르자 사울은 아버지가 걱정하시겠다며 그만 돌아가자고 합니다. 그러자 시종은 이곳에 하나님을 아는 자가 있으니 그를 찾아 물어보자고 합니다. 여기서는 seer 선견자라고 하는 것 같고요. 6절 부분이 특히 의미심장한 것이 이름도 안 나오는 무명의 시종이 어찌 그것을 알고 찾아간다는 것일까요? 마치 하나님의 숨겨진 전령사 같은 느낌이 들지 않습니까?

 

5. When they came to the land of Zuph, Saul said to his servant who was with him, "Come, let us go back, lest my father cease to care about the donkeys and become anxious about us." 6 But he said to him, "Behold, there is a man of God in this city, and he is a man who is held in honour, all that he says comes true. So now let us go there. Perhaps he can tell us the way we should go." 7 Then Saul said to his servant, "But if we go, what can we bring the man? For the bread in our sacks is gone, and there is no present to bring to the man of God. What do we have?" 8 The servant answered Saul again, "Here, I have with me a quarter of a shekel of silver, and I WILL give it to the man of God to tell us our way." 9 (Formerly in Israel, when a man went to enquire of God, he said, "Come, let us go to the seer", for today's "prophet" was formerly called a seer.) 10 AND Saul said to his serant, "Well said; come, let us go." So they went to the city where the man of God was.

 

나름 예의 범절을 아는 사람인지라 하나님에게 드릴 예물이 없다며 무엇을 가지고 갈지 고민합니다. 그러자 시종은 자신의 하찮은 보석, 그래봤자 실반지 정도나 될까요? 그거라도 드려보자고 합니다. 시종이 참으로 똘망한 것 같습니다. 어찌 되었든 사울은 매우 수동적이며 겁이 많고 대처 능력이 부족한 반면 시종은 참으로 스마트해 보입니다. 그리고 이러한 에피소드로 느낄 수 있는 점은 사울이 책임감은 있지만 목적에 대한 내면적 확신은 약해 보입니다. 뭔가 리더십도 용기도 부족한 인간형이란 걸 유추할 수 있습니다. 

3. 선견자를 찾아서

성읍을 찾아 다다랐을 때 이들이 마침 물 긷는 소녀들을 만나서 여기 선견자가 있느냐고 물어봅니다. 그러자 소녀들은 지금 가면 곧 만날 수 있을 거라며 알려 줍니다. 그러면서 그가 산당에 가기 전에 만나야 한다고 합니다. 그리고 마침 그를 만나게 되는 데요. 선견자는 바로 사무엘을 의미하는 거였습니다.

11 As they went up the hill to the city, they met young women coming out to draw water and said to them, "Is the seer here?" 12 They answered, "He is; behold, he is just ahead of you. HURRY, He has come just now to the city, because the people have a sacrifice today on the high place. 13 As soon as you enter the city you will find him, before he goes up to the high place to eat. For the people will not eat till he comes, since he must bless the sacrifice; afterwards those who are invited will eat. Now go up, for you will meet him immediately." 14 So they went up to the city. As they were entering the city, they saw Samuel coming out towards them on his way up to the high place.

4. 하나님의 계시

이들이 선견자라고 하는 이는 바로 사무엘인데요. 사무엘은 그러잖아도 전날 밤 하나님의 계시를 받은 터였습니다. 그래서 사울을 보자마자 한 눈에 알아본 것입니다. 사무엘은 대뜸 사흘 전에 잃어버린 암나귀는 염려하지 말아라. 찾았느니라, 하고 말합니다. 그러면서 이스라엘의 소망이 네게 있지 아니하냐?라고 합니다.

 15 Now the day before Saul came, the Lord had revealed to Samuel: 16"Tomorrow about this time I will send to you a  man from the land of Benjamin, and you shall anoint him to be prince over my people Israel. He shall save my people from the hand of the Philistines. For I have seen my people, because their cry has come to me." 17 When Samuel saw Saul, the Lord told him, "Here is the man of whom I SPOKE to you! He it is who shall restrain my people." 18 Then Saul approached Samuel in the gate and said, "Tell me where is the house of the seer?" 19 Samuel answered Saul, " I am the seer. Go up before me to the high place, for today you shall eat with me, and in the morning I will let you go and will tell you all that is on your mind. 20 AS for your donkeys that were lost three days ago, do not set your mind on them, for they have been found. And for whom is all that is desirable in Israel? Is it not for you and for all your father's house?" 21 Saul answered, "Am I not a Benjaminite, from the least of the tribes of Israel? And is not my clan the humblest of all the clans of the tribe of Benjamin? Why then have you spoken to me in this way?"

 

사울 입장에선 웬 뜬금포인가 싶었을 겁니다. 그렇게 누군가의 아들에서 이스라엘의 왕으로 전환되는 순간입니다. 이처럼 우연을 통해 드러나는 필연과 일상을 통해 계시되는 소명을 여실히 보여주는 에피소드였습니다.

5. 왕으로 부름받은 사자의 전야

당연히 사울은 어리둥절했겠고요. 사무엘은 대뜸 사울과 그의 종을 안내하여 객실로 들입니다. 그리고 약 30명 되는 손님들 중 윗자리에 앉혔습니다. 이는 사회적 위치의 전환을 의미합니다. 

22 Then Samuel took Saul and his young man and brought them into the hall and gave them a place at the head of those who had been invited, who were about thirty persons. 23 And Samuel said to the cook, "Bring the portion I gave you, of which I said to you, 'Put is aside, '" 24 So the cook took up the leg and what was on it and set them before Saul. And Samuel said, "See, what was kept is set before you. Eat, because it was kept for you until the hour appointed, that you might eat with the guests."

 So Saul ate with Samuel that day. 25 And when they came down from the high place into the city, a bed was spread for Saul on the roof, and he lay down to sleep. 26 Then at the break of dawn Samuel called to Saul on the roof, "Get up, that I may send you on your way." So Saul arose, and both he and Samuel went out into the street.

 

그리고 음식부터 남다른 것을 먹입니다. 당시 넓적다리는 고대 희생 제사에서 가장 존귀한 부위였기에 사울은 이미 왕 대접을 받기 시작한 겁니다. 그렇게 먹는 방식을 통해 왕으로 지명되고 있었습니다.

6. 계시 직전의 순간

 

27 As they were going down to the outskirts of the city, Samuel said to Saul, "Tell the servant to pass on before us, and when he has passed on, stop here yourself for a while, that I may make known to you word of God."

 

계시의 절대 조건은 혼자 있어야만 할 때이어야만 합니다. 아브라함도 장막 밖에 혼자 있을때 그랬고 모세도 시내산에서 단독 대면했다고 하고요. 엘리야도 호렙산 동굴에서 고요히 음성을 들었습니다. 그리고 예수 역시 마찬가지였고요. 사울은 본인이 그렇게 급작스럽게 왕이 될 줄도 몰랐기에 사무엘에 왜 시종을 먼저 가라 하면서 거리 두기를 했는지 아직 의미를 알지 못했습니다.
