바다를 구경하러 온 사람들에 대한 묘사 (모비딕)

이스마엘은 사람들이 바다 주변에서 어슬렁거리면서 바다를 갈구하는 사람들의 군상을 관조하면서 궁금해합니다. 제각기 다른 곳에서 온 낯선 사람들이 주일 내내 일만 하다 왔을 텐데 바다가 뭐라고 저리 한 곳에 몰려 관망하고 있는 것일까? 

 

 

카토와 다른 선택을 한 까닭

 

 

 

This is my substitute for pistol and ball. With a philosophical flourish Cato throws himself upon his sword; I quietly take to the ship. There is nothing surprising in this. If they but knew it, almost all men in their degree, some time or other, cherish very nearly the same feelings towards the ocean with me.

 

 

 

이스마엘이 일종의 분노를 삭이는 방법이 바다 한가운데로 나가는 것이라고 말하며 이것이 자신의 권총이자 공이라고 하였습니다. 그러니까 어딘가에 내지르고 싶은 마음을 표현한 것이지요. 그러면서 철학가 카토 이야기를 합니다. 카토는 자신에게 칼을 던졌지만 나는 배를 탔다고 하였는데요. 자살 대신 항해를 한다는 심정이 어떤 것인지 잘 와닿지는 않지만 표현을 잘한 것 같아요.

뛰어나고 청렴한 정치가 카토는 불구대천의 원수 카이사르가 지배하는 세상에서 살고 싶지 않아서 자살을 선택했고 하인들이 발견하고 의사들이 그의 창자를 봉합했음에도 그는 자신의 수술 부위를 복개하고 다시 자살을 선택한 무서운 사람이었습니다. 그의 자살이 카이사르 폭정에 대한 승리로 보아 당시 수많은 문호들이 그를 추앙하는 글을 추앙했다고 합니다. 대체 이스마엘은 어떤 사람이길래 이런 결기를 가지고 바다로 항해를 하고 싶은 거였을 까요?

 

 

 

 

 

 바다를 보기 위해 몰려온 사람들

 

 

There now is your insular city of the Manhattoes, belted round by wharves as Indian isles by coral reefs- commerce surrounds it with her surf. Right and left, the streets take you waterward. Its extreme down-town is the battery, where that noble mole is washed by waves, and cooled by breezes, which a few hours precious were out of sight of land. Look at the crowds of water-gazers there.

꿈같은 안식일 오후를 거닐며

 

Go from Corlears Hook to Coenties Slip, and from thence, by Whitehall, northward. What do you see?- Posted like silent sentinels all around the town, stand thousands upon thousands of mortal men fixed in ocean reveries.

 

대략 거리 북쪽 즈음에 뭐가 보이나요? 파수꾼처럼 도시를 에워싼, 수천만의 필멸의 사람들이 바다의 몽상에 빠져 있습니다.

 

 

이 느낌이 뭔 지 알 것 같습니다. 바다를 동경하여 도시 사람들이 망망대해를 바라보는 모습이 멀리서 봤을 때 붙박이 병정처럼 보이는 거죠. 멀리서 사람들을 봤을 때 뭔가 어리석어 보이는 그런 느낌. 바다의 깊이는 알지도 못하면서 바다를 보면서 망상 혹은 공상에 빠져 넋을 잃게 되는 그런 상황이 연상됩니다. 

 

 

 그들은 여기서 무엇을 하나?

 

이스마엘은 상당히 화가 많으면서도 현실적인 사람 같습니다. 자신도 필멸의 인간이면서 인간의 순진한 군상을 동정 어린 시선보다는 어리석은 시선으로 보는 것 같습니다. 

 

Some leaning against the spiles; some seated upon the pier-heads; some looking over the bulwarks of ships from China; seaward peep. But these are all landsmen' of week days pent up in lath and plaster- tied to counters, nailed to benches, clinched to desks. How then is this? Are the green fields gone? What do they here?

 

이스마엘은 다양한 자세로 바다를 보기 위해 몰려온 사람들에 대해 의아해합니다. 책상에 앉아 붙박이로 종일 일하다 온, 그러니까 관성에 절어 일하다 온 사람들이 바다는 왜 보러 온 것인지, 푸른 들판이 사라지기라도 한 것인지 아이러니하다는 뉘앙스입니다. 이런 관점은 한 번도 생각해 본 적이 없는데요.

 

 

 

 자성처럼 끌어들이는 바다의 매력

 

 

 

 

But look! here come more crowds, pacing straight for the water, and seemingly bound for a dive. Stranger! Nothing will content them but the extremest limit of the land; loitering under the shady lee of yonder warehouses will not suffice.

 

No. They must get just as night the water as they possibly can without falling in.

 

And there they stand- miles of them- leagues. Inlanders all, they come from lanes and alleys, streets and avenues- north, cast, south, and west. Yet here they all unite. Tell me, does the magnetic virtue of the needles of the compasses of all those ships attract them thither?

 

하지만 사람들은 단순히 구경하는 것에 멈추지 않고 바다에 빠지기 좋은 곳까지 다다릅니다. 이방인! 최대한 물에 빠지지 않는 선에서 바다를 만끽하려고 합니다, 대충 이런 느낌으로 읽힙니다. 그러니까 바다 가까이서 어슬렁거리는 것으로 만족하지 못하는 모습이라는 거죠.

 

소위, 육지 사람들은 각기 다른 방향에서 왔지만 자력에 이끌리듯 한 곳으로 모여들고 있습니다. 그렇게 끌어들이게 하는 매력은 뭘까요?
