모비딕 챕터 3장 스파우트 모델

모비딕 챕터 3장 초반은 모텔 내부에 대한 세세한 묘사이며 그중에서 불길하고 부조화스러운 그림에 대한 신랄한 평가가 인상적입니다. 

 

 

낡은 징두리

 

Entering that gable-ended Spouter-Inn, you found yourself in a wide, low, straggling entry with old-fashioned wainscots, reminding one of the bulwarks of some condemned old craft.

 

드디어 모텔 입구에 들어서는 이스마엘입니다. 오래되고 낡고 낮고 정신산만한 웨인스코트 얘기를 하고 있는데요. 한국어로는 징두리라고 합니다. 평소 이것의 이름을 생각해 본 적 조차 없는데 덕분에 잘 알았습니다. 그리고 이스마엘은 이 징두리를 마치 오래된 흔적을 지닌 성채 혹은 보루처럼 보였나 봅니다. 

 

 

 

On one side hung a very large oil painting so thoroughly besmoked, and every way defaced, that in the unequal crosslights by which you viewed it, it was only by diligent study and a series of systematic visits to it, and careful inquiry of the neighbors, that you could any way arrive at an understanding of its purpose. Such unaccountable masses of shades ad shadows, that at first you almost thought some ambitious young artist, in the time of the New England hags, had endeavored to delineate chaos bewitched. But by dint of much and earnest contempaltion, and oft repeated pondrings, and especially by throwing open the little window towards the back of the entry, you at last come to the conclusion that such an idea, however wild, might not be altogether unwarranted.

 

그리고 앞으로 한참동안 묘사하게 될 그림 한 점이 나옵니다. 이스마엘은 벽에 커다란 유화가 걸린 것을 보게 됩니다. 전체적으로 그을음으로 더럽혀진 그림에 불규칙한 교차 조명으로 볼 때 성실하게 공부하거나 체계적인 탐문 및 이웃들에게 물어보는 등의 탐정 놀이를 하지 않는 한 그 목적을 이해하기 어려울 거라는 의미로 읽힙니다. 그림이 왜 저렇게 더럽고 난해하게 걸려 있는 걸까? 뭐 그런 느낌이 아니었으려나요?

 

 

 

그림은 의도를 파악하기 어려울 정도로 그림자에 그림자가 드리워져 있고 마치 의욕 넘치는 젊은 아티스트의 첫 작품으로 뉴잉글랜드의 해그 시대의 혼란을 묘사한 것처럼 보일 뻔했다고 합니다. 그림이 기괴하고 불길하고 정신 산만하다는 것 같습니다. 

 

 

 

 그림의 정체

 

 

 

But what most puzzled and confounded you was a long, limber, portentous, black mass of something hovering in the centre of the picture over three blue, dim, perpendicular lines floating in a nameless yeast. A boggy, soggy, squitchy picture truly, enough to drive a nervous man distracted. Yet was there a sort of indefinite, halfattained, unimaginable sublimity about it that fairly froze you to it, till you involuntarily took an oath with yourself to find out what that marvellous painting meant. Ever and anon a bright, but, alas, deeptive diea would dart you through.- It's the Black Sea in a midnight gale.-

 

그림의 퍼즐을 맞추기 위해 가장 혼란스러웠던 것은 길고 유연하고 불길하며 중심에 블랙의 어떤 떠다니는 세 개의 푸른 정체가 희미한 수직선 위에 맴돌거나 떠돌아 다니는 이미지입니다. 축축하고 눅눅하고 어쨌거나 충분히 불길하고 기분 나쁜 느낌을 주는 그림인 것 같습니다. 

 

 

 

It's the unnatural combat of the four primal elements.- It's a blasted heath- It's a Hyperborean winter scene.- It's the breaking- up of the ice-bound stream of Time. But at last all these fancies yielded to that one portentous something in the picture's midst. That once found out, and all the rest were plain. But stop; does it not bear a faint resemblance to a gigantic fish? even the great leviathan himself?

 

그리고 어딘가 부자연스러운 요소들의 조합처럼 보이는데요. 여기에 부자연스럽다는 것은 마치 따뜻한 아이스아메리카노를 마시는 것 같은 기분이라고 해도 될지 모르겠습니다. 앙상한 건강함이라던가 상춘국과 비슷한 북풍 너머 따뜻한 나라의 겨울 같은 느낌이라던가 전체적으로 부조화에 부자연스럽고 불길한 이 그림에 등장하는 거대한 물고기조차 조악하게 그려졌나 봅니다.
