모비딕 챕터 3장 스파우트 인에 들어가다

모비딕 챕터 1장은 바다로 가서 2장은 고래잡는 선원이 되기로 하여 3장은 배에 오르기 전 모텔에 잠시 투숙하는 내용입니다. 아무래도 이야기에서 핵심적인 역할을 할 것으로 보이는데요. 한국식으로는 물보라 여관인 스파우트 인의 입구부터 방을 잡기까지 참으로 글이 길기도 합니다.

In fact, the artist's design seemed this: a final theory of my own, partly based upon the aggregated opinions of many aged persons with whom I conversed upon the subject. The picture represents a Cape-Horner in a great hurricane; the half-foundered ship weltering there with its three dismantled masts alone visible; and an exasperated whale, purposing to spring clean over the craft, is in the enormous act of impaling himself upon the three mast-heads.

 

 

 

 

 

 

그림에 관하여 지역 터줏대감같은 노인들과도 얘기를 많이 나눴던 모양입니다. 그래서 최종적으로 그림에 대한 총평을 하였는데요. 케이프 호너에서 허리케인을 만나 배가 아작이 난 상태처럼 보인다고 하는 것 같은데요. 케이프 호너는 남아메리카의 푸에고 아레나스 산맥과 아이스랜드 사이에 위치한 곶으로 뿔 모양이어서 케이프 호너라고 지은 것 같습니다. 그리고 이 지역은 보기에도 위태로워 보이는 것처럼 세계에서 가장 위험하고 난해한 항해 중 하나로 알려져 있는 곳이라고 합니다. 그런 곳에서 허리케인을 만났다면 정말 아찔하겠네요.

 

아무튼, 세 개의 해체된 돛대만 보이는 상태에서 분노한 고래가 주변을 날뛰는 장면을 묘사한 그림인 것 같다고 합니다. 

 

 

 

  야만적으로 보이는 무기들

 

 

 

The opposite wall of this entry was hung all over with a heathenish array of monstrous clubs and spears.

 

그림에 대한 설명은 이쯤에서 끝낸 것 같고요. 반대편 벽에는 곤봉과 창 같은 것이 야만적인 느낌으로 걸려있다고 하는데요.

 

Some were thickly set with glittering teeth resemblig ivory saws; others were tufted with knots of human hair; and one was sickle-shaped, with a vast handle sweeping round like the segment made in the new-mown grass by a longarmed mower.

 

You shuddered as you gazed, and wondered what monstrous cannibal and savage could ever have gone a deathharvesting with such a hacking, horrifying implement.

 

뭔가 요소요소에 걸려있는 것들이 몸서리 칠 정도로 께름칙하게 느껴졌던 것 같습니다. 무시무시한 도구로 끔찍한 것들의 죽음을 수확할 수 있는지 의아했던 모양입니다. 

 

Mixed with these were resty old whaling lances and harpoons all broken and deformed. Some were storied weapons.

 

이것들과 섞여 오래된 포경선과 작살이 부서지고 변형되어 있습니다. 그리고 무기들에는 스토리가 담겨 있습니다.

 

 

With this once long lance, now wildly elbowed, fifty years aga did Nathan Swain kill fifteen whales between a sunrise and a sunset. And that harpoon- so like a corkscrew now- was flung in Java seas, and run away with by a whale, years afterwards slain off the Cape of Blanco. The original iron entered nigh the tail, and, like a restless needle sojourning in the body of a man, travelled full forty feet, and at last was found imbedded in the hump.

 

 

 

이 긴 창은 50년 전 네이슨 스웨인이란 사람이 해가 뜰 때부터 질 때까지 고래 15마리를 죽인 창이며 지금은 코르크 마개따는 용도로 보일 정도로 초라해 보이는 작살은 자바 바다에서 고래 몸에 꽂힌채로 도망갔는데 몇 년 후 블랑코 곶 앞바다에서 발견되었다고 합니다. 블랑코 케이프는 스페인 알라메다 지방에 위치한 해안 지역인데요. 아름다운 경치와 유명한 등대로 유명한 곳이라고 합니다. 이 작살은 고래 꼬리 근처에 박혔다가 고래 등의 혹 속에 묻힌 상태로 발견되었습니다.

 

 

 

  술 파는 노인 요나

 

Crossing this dusky entry, and on through you low-arched way-cut through what in old times must have been a great central chimney with fire-places all round- you enter the public room. A still duskier place is this, with such low ponderous beams above, and such old wrinkled planks beneath, that you would almost fancy you trod some old craft's cockpits, especially of such a howling night, when this corner-anchored old ark rocked so furiously. On one side stood a long, low, shelf-like table covered with cracked glass cases, filled with dusty rarities gathered from this wide world's remotest nooks. Projecting from the further angle of the room stands a dark-looking den- the bar- a rude attempt at a right whale's head. Be that how it may, there stands the vast arched bone of the whale's jaw, so wide, a coach might almost drive beneath it. Within are shabby shelves, ranged round with old decanters, bottles, flasks; and in those jaws of swift destruction, like another cursed Jonah(by which name indeed they called him), bustles a little withered old man, who , for their money, dearly sells the sailors deliriums nad death.

 

괴상한 그림에 이어 야만적인 무기들을 지나 어둑어둑한 입구를 가로질러 낮은 아치길이 등장하고 퍼블릭 룸에 도달하게 됩니다. 그리고 이곳은 훨씬 더 어두침침합니다. 위에는 육중한 들보가 낮게 그리고 바닥은 낡은 주름 가득한 널빤지 아마 당신은 오래된 기체의 조종석을 밟는 기분일 것이다. 특히 이렇게 하울링 나이트에는. 하울링 나이트를 울부짖는 밤이라고 하는 것보다 보다 근사한 표현이 없으려나요? 뭔가 음산하고 을씨년스러우면서 적요하고 신비하고 쓸쓸한 느낌을 주는 적절한 단어를 못 찾겠습니다.

 

 

 

이스마엘은 마치 요새 같은 공간을 발견한 듯, 어떤 상상력이 작동했던지 모서리에 고정된 방주가 격렬하게 흔들렸을 때 한쪽에는 낮고 오래된 선반이 있었는데 그 위에는 금이 간 유리 장식장이 있었고 그 안에는 이 넓은 세상의 가장 먼 구석에서 모인 먼지 투성이의 진귀한 물건들로 가득차 있다고 표현합니다. 그리고 건너편에는 서툴게 고래 모양을 모방한 것 같은 bar가 있었습니다.

 

 

 

 

 

모양이 조악했던 모양인데요.  입을 크게 벌리고 있는 고래의 턱뼈는 마차 한대가 지나가도 될 정도로 넓었다고 하였고 실제로 요나라고 불리는 노인이 선원들의 섬망과 죽음을 값진 대가로 팔고 있었습니다. 그냥 조악한 인테리어의 모텔 바 안에서 늙은 노인이 돈을 벌기 위해 손님들에게 술을 팔고 있었다는 이야기입니다. 참고로 요나는 성경 요나서에 나오는 요나로 고래 뱃 속에 3일 동안 갇혀 있다 살아났던가 하는 그 선지자 요나가 맞고요. 작고 깡마른 노인이라고 하니 요나가 아닌 요다가 생각이 나네요.

그가 독을 따라주는 텀블러는 가증스럽고 불쾌하기 짝이 없습니다. 겉과 다르게 잔의 내부는 좁아 양을 속이려는 기만적인 속임수가 눈에 보이는 녹색 고블렛 잔이기 때문입니다. 평행한 자오선이 조잡하게 술잔에 새겨져 있는데 이 선을 채우면 1페니씩 추가되어 케이프 혼 선까지 채우면 1실링을 꿀꺽 삼키게 되는 것입니다.

 

 

 

Upon entering the place I found a number of young seamen gathered about a table, examining by a dim light divers specimens of skrimshander. I sought the landlord, and telling him I desired to be accommodated with a room, received for answer that his house was full-not a bed unoccupied. 'But avast,' he added, tapping his forehead, ' you haint no objections to sharing a harpooneer's blanket, have ye? I s'pose you are goin' a-whalin', so you'd better get used to that sort of thing.'

 

안쪽으로 들어서자 많은 젊은 선원들이 테이블에 모여 있었습니다. 

 

 

 

이들은 스크림샨더를 구경하고 있었다는 것인지 희미한 불빛 속 다이버들이 기이한 고래 이빨 표본을 조사하고 있는 모습처럼 보였다는 것인지 좀 모호합니다. 스크림샨더는 고래의 이빨이나 뼈 등을 이용해 만든 장식품을 의미하는데요. 그냥 액면 그대로 실내 장식처럼 있는 고래 장식 등을 살펴 보고 있었다고 해야 하려나요? 이 작가가 워낙 상상력이 풍부해서 현상과 상상이 혼재되어 있는 것 같아서 말입니다.

 

 

 

이스마엘은 주인장에게 방을 하나 쓰고 싶다고 하니 방이 꽉 찼다고 얘기합니다. 그러더니 자신의 이마를 톡톡 두드리더니만 하푸니어, 아무래도 고래잡이라고 하는 것 같죠? 하푸너와 담요를 함께 쓰는 것도 괜찮겠지? 하면서 보아하니 너도 고래 잡으러 가는 것 같으니 그런 일에 익숙해 지는 것도 좋겠다면서 말입니다. 

 

I told him that I never liked to sleep two in a bed; that if I should ever do so, it would depend upon who the harpooneer might be, and that if he(the landlord) really had no other place for me, and the harpooneer was not decidedly objectionable, why rather than wander further about a strange town on so bitter a night, I would put up with the half of any decent man's blanket.

 

나는 한 침대에서 둘이 같이 자는 것을 좋아하지 않지만 어쩔 수 없다면 하푸니어에게 달려있다. 정말로 나를 위한 방이 없다면 그 작살잡이가 싫은 내색을 하지 않는다면 이렇게 낯설고 추운 밤에 헤매이는 것보다는 점잖은 남자의  담요를 반씩 나눠서 덮는 게 낫겠다라고 주인장에게 말했습니다. 

 

 ' I thought so. All right; take a seat. Supper?- you want supper? Supper'll be ready directly.'

 

그럴 줄 알았당께. 앉아. 저녁은? 저녁은 곧 준비 될껴.

 

주인장이 좀 말이 짧고 사투리가 있는 것 같쥬?

 

 I sat down on an old wooden settle, carved all over like a bench on the Battery. At one end a ruminating tar was still further adorning it with his jack-knife, stooping over and diligently working away at the space betweenhis legs. He was trying his hand at a ship under full sail, but he didn't make much headway, I thought.

 

그렇게 이스마엘은 어렵사리 방을 구했고 낡은 의자에 앉았습니다. 의자는 칼자국 투상이었고요. 의자 한쪽 끝에는 한 남자가 다리 사이로 뭔가를 열심히 새기고 있었고 그의 생각대로 잘 새겨지지는 않는가 보다하고 이스마엘은 생각했습니다.
