돌들의 의미 여호수아 4장

여호수아의 리더십 확립과 하나님의 임재를 확인하는 여호수아 4장입니다. 여호수아는 지파 대표 12명에게 돌 12개를 가져오라고 하는데요. 그것을 여호수아가 길갈에 쌓는 것으로 마무리됩니다.

 

여호수아의 위상

1. When all the nation had finished passing over the Jordan, the Lord said to Joshua, 2 "Take twelve men from the people, from each tribe a man, 3 and command them, saying 'Take twelve stones from here out of the midst of the Jordan, from the very place where the priests' feet stood firmly, and bring them ofer with you and lay them down in the place where you lodge tonight.'" 4 Then Joshua called the twelve men from the people of Israel, whom he had appointed, a man from each tribe. 5 And Joshua said to them, "Pass on before the ark of the LORD your God into the midst of the Jordan, and take up each of you a stone upon his shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of the people of Israel, 6 that this may be a sign among you. When your children ask in time to cme, 'What do those stones mean to you?' 7 then you shall tell them that the waters of the Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the Lord. When it passed over the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off. So these stones shall be to the people of Israel a memorial for ever."

 

 

요단강을 무사히 건넌 여호수아는 각 지파의 12명을 착출해서는 각기 돌을 가져오라고 합니다. 강바닥의 자연 돌을 의미하는 거였겠죠. 그러면서 12개의 돌을 쌓았는데요. 이는 하나님이 요단강 물을 멈추게 한 기적의 증가라고 합니다. 이것이 모아이의 석상 같은 건가 싶었는데, 이처럼 화려하고 웅장하지는 않지만, 신앙적으로는 엄청 묵직한 의미를 담고 있으며 아브라함의 단, 사무엘의 에벤에셀 같은 걸로 보면 됩니다.

 

 

다 비슷한 돌이지만 쌓인 모습이 제각각이네요. 여호수아의 돌무더기가 세워진 장소를 길갈(gilgal)이라고 하는데 마치 조선시대 머슴 이름이 연상되네요. 

 

 

여호수아 3장 읽기

요단강에도 기적? 뛰어난 지략가 여호수아 3장

 

8 And the people of Israel did just as Joshua commanded and took up twelve stones out of the midst of the Jordan, according to the number of the tribes of the people of Israel, just as the Lord told Joshua. And they carried them over with them to the place where they lodged and laid them down there. 9 And Joshua set up twelve stones in the midst of the Jordan, in the place where the feet of the priests bearing the ark of the covenant had stood; and they are there to this day. 10 For the priests bearing the ark stood in the midst of the Jordan until everything was finished that the Lord commanded Joshua to tell the people, according to all that Moses had commanded Joshua.

 

 

The people passed over in haste. 11 And when all the people had finished passing over, the ark of the Lord and the priests passed over before the people. 12 The sons of Reuben and the sons of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh passed over armed before the people of Israel, as Moses had told them. 13 About 40,000 ready for war passed over before the Lord for battle, to the plains of Jericho. 14 On that day the Lord exalted Joshua in the sight of all Israel, and they stood in awe of him just as they had stood in awe of Moses, all the days of his life.

 

이처럼 여호수아의 리더십이 진짜로 세워진 순간을 천명하게 됩니다. 당시 이스라엘 백성들 입장에서는 모세만큼 대단한 사람이란 생각이 들고도 남을 만큼 멋져 보였던 것이죠.

 

 요단강에서 올라온 순간

15 And the Lord said to Joshua, 16 " Command the priests bearing the ark of the testimony to come up out of the Jordan." 17 So Joshua commanded the priests, "Come up out of the Jordan." 18 And when the priests bearing the ark of the covenant of the Lord came up from the midst of the Jordan, and the sloes of the priests' feet were lifted up on dry ground, the waters of the Jordan returned to their place and overflowed all its banks, as before.

 

 

이게 진짜 기적이 아닌가 합니다. 여호수아는 언약궤를 맨 제사장들에게 요단강에서 올라오라고 하니 그 즉시에 강물이 원래처럼 넘쳐흐르게 됩니다. 당연히 이스라엘 군대는 전투력 뿜뿜이었겠죠.

 

 길갈에 돌을 세우다

 

19 The people came up out of the Jordan on the tenth day of the first month, and they encamped at Gilgal on the east border of Jericho. 20 And those twelve stones, which they took out of the Jordan, Joshua set up at Gilgal. 21 And he said to the people of Israel, "When your children ask their fathers in times to come, 'What do these stones mean?' 22 then you shall let your children know, 'Israel passed over this Jordan on dry ground.' 23 For the LOrd your God dried up the waters of the Jordan for you until you passed over, as the Lord your God did to the Red Sea, which he dried up for us until we passed over, 24 so that all the peoples of the earth may know that the hand of the Lord is mighty, that you may fear the Lord your God for ever."

 

일단 성경은 스토리텔링이 참으로 복잡합니다. 설명과 서사가 번갈아 등장하기 때문입니다. 그러니까 이야기를 전개하다가 다시 설명하고 또 전개하고 의미부연하는 식인데요. 정신을 똑바로 차리지 않으면 엄청 헷갈릴 것 같습니다.

 

 

다시 내용을 정리하자면, 먼저 백성들이 요단강을 건너기 시작하고 여호수아가 지파별로 대표 12명을 뽑습니다. 그래서 각 지파별 대표가 요단강 바닥에서 돌 12개를 집어 왔고요. 땅을 이미 받은 르우벤, 갓, 므낫세 반 지파의 용사 4만 명이 선두에 서게 합니다. 그리고 모든 백성이 다 건너자 하나님이 명령하십니다. 여호수아에게 언약궤 멘 제사장들에게 이제 올라오라고 명령하십니다. 이들이 올라오자마자 요단강 물이 흐르기 시작하면서 기적의 순간은 완벽하게 마무리됩니다. 

 

그리고 여호수아는 요단강에서 가져온 12개의 돌을 길갈에 세워 기념비로 삼았습니다. 이 돌무더기는 후손 교육용, 요단강 기적의 증거로 남게 되었다고 합니다. 이와 같은 의례 등을 통해 이스라엘은 여호수아를 완전히 신뢰하고 존경하게 되었다는 이야기입니다.

 

훗날 후손들이 이 돌들은 뭐죠? 하고 물으면 하나님이 요단강 물을 끊으시고 우리를 마른 땅으로 건너게 하셨다, 고 말하라고 큰 그림을 그린 것이죠.
