다윗의 새 아내 아비가엘 이야기 사무엘상 25장

사무엘상 25장은 다윗과 아비가일의 만남, 그리고 나발의 어리석음과 죽음에 대한 이야기를 다루고 있습니다. 이 장은 다윗의 인내와 하나님의 공의, 그리고 지혜로운 여인의 역할을 보여주는 중요한 에피소드입니다.

1. 사무엘의 죽음

1. Now Samuel died. And all Israel assembled and mourned for him, and they buried him in his house at Ramah.

사무엘의 죽음으로 시작하는 25장 이야기입니다. 다윗에게 기름을 부어준 멘토 같은 제사장이기에 그의 죽음이 남달리 슬펐을 겁니다. 다윗 입장에서는 고립무원에 처인 상황인 것입니다.

 

그러한 가운데 다윗은 마온에 사는 나발이라는 부유한 사람을 소개받습니다. 일종의 정치 스폰서인가 싶기도 한데요. 한국식으로 따지면 박연차나 성완종 같은 같은 사람이었나 싶기도 합니다. 아무튼, 나발은 양 3천 마리와 염소 천 마리를 지닌 엄청난 부자였습니다. 그러나 완고하고 행실이 악하며 어리석은 자였다고 합니다. 반면 그의 아내 아비가일은 총명하고 용모가 아름다운 여인으로 묘사됩니다.

Then David rose and went down to the wilderness of Paran. 2 And there was a man in Maon whose business was in Carmel. The man was very rich; he had three thousand sheep and a thousand goats. He was shearing his sheep in Carmel. 3 Now the name of the man was Nabal, and the name of his wife was Abigail. THe woman was discerning and beautiful, but the man was harsh and badly behaved; he was a Calebite. 4 David heard in the wilderness that Nabal was shearing his sheep. 5 So David sent ten young men. And David said to the young men, "Go up to Carmel, and go to Nabal and greet him in my name. 6 And thus you shall greet him:'Peace be to you, and peace be to your house, and peace be to all that you have. 7 I hear that you have shearers. Now you shepherds have been with us, and we did them no harm, and they missed nothing all the time they were in Carmel. 8 Ask your young men, and they will tell you. Therefore let my young men find favour in your eyes, for we come on a feast day. Please give whatever you have at hand to your servants and to your son David.'"

2.다윗의 요청과 나발의 모욕

다윗은 나발에게 양을 지켜주겠으니 식량을 달라고 했던 모양입니다. 이런 상황들이 마치 이삭이 형 에서를 피해서 삼촌 라반네서 일하던 모습이 연상됩니다. 관련 내용은 창세기 28장을 참고하시고요.

9.When David's young men came, they said all this to Nabal in the name of David, and then they waited. 10 And Nabal answered David's servants, "Who is David? Who is the son of Jesse? There are many servants these days who are breaking away from their masters. 11. Shall I take my bread and my water and my meat that I have killed for my shearers and give it to men who come from I DO NOT KNow where?" 12 So David's young men turned away and came back and told him all this. 13 And David said to his men, "Every man strap on his sword!" David also strapped on his sword. And about four hundred men went up after David, while two hundred remained with the baggage.

 

그런데 건방진 나발이 다윗이 누구냐며, 이새의 아들? 웃기고 있네, 일할 사람은 널렸다며 거절하자 다윗이 400명의 부하를 이끌고 나발을 죽이려고 하였습니다.

3. 아비가일의 중재

이 소식을 들은 나발의 아내 아비가일은 많은 식량을 들고 가서 다윗에게 납작 엎드렸습니다. 남편이 철이 없어서 그런 것이니 너그러이 용서해 주세요,라고 말합니다. 그리고 하나님도 장차 왕이 될 몸이니 용서하라고 했다는데요. 하나님이 무슨 그런 말을 했겠습니까. 그냥 다윗의 믿음이 신실하니 하나님이 그렇게 원하셨을 거야,라고 생각한 것이겠죠.

 

인간들은 하나님은 꿈쩍도 안 하시는데 자기들 멋대로 합리화를 한다니까요. 아무튼, 다윗은 아비가일의 미모와 현명한 대처에 감동을 했던 것인지 나발을 죽이지 않겠다고 합니다. 다시 보니 아비가일이 한 말 같군요. 다윗님은 장차 왕이 되실 몸인데 뭐 하려고 직접 피를 묻히시려고 합니까. 내 남편이 어리석어서 그런 것이니 부디 이해 바란다고 그런 식으로 말한 것 같습니다.

 

 14 But one of the young men told Abigail, Nabal's wife, "Behold, David sent messengers out of the wilderness to greet our master, and he railed at them. 15 Yet the men were very good to us, and we suffered no harm, and we did not miss anything when we were in the fields, as long as we went with them. 16 They were a wall to us both by night and by day, all the while we were with them keeping the sheep. 17 Now therefore know this and consider what you should do, for harm is determined against our master and against all his house, and he is such a worthless man that one cannot speak to him."

 

18 THen Abigail made haste and took two hundred loaves and two skins of wine and five sheep already prepared and five seahs of parched grain and a hundred clusters of raisins and two hundred cakes of figs, and laid them on donkeys. 19 And she said to her young men, "Go on before me; behold, I come after you." BUT she did not tell her husband Nabal. 20 And as she rode on the donkey and came down under cover of the mountain, behold, David and his men came down towards her, and she met them. 21 Now David had said, "Surely in vain have I guarded all that this fellow has in the wilderness, so that nothing was missed of all that belonged to him, and he has returned me evil for good. 22 God do so to the enemies of David and more also, if by morning I leave so much as one male of all who belong to him."

4. 아비가일에게 반한 다윗

나발의 아내 아비가일이 외모가 출중해서 반한 것인지 어마무시한 선물 보따리를 들고 와서 그런 것인지는 모르겠습니다만, 다윗은 아비가일의 청을 들어주었고 그녀의 미모와 겸손에 감흥이 있던 것 같습니다. 

 

23 When Abigail saw David, she hurried and got down from the donkey and fell before David on her face and bowed to the ground. 24 She fell at his feet and said, "On me alone, my lord, be the guilt. Please let your servant speak in your ears, and hear the words of your servant. 25. Let not my lord regard this worthless fellow, Nabal, for as his name is, so is he. Nabal is his name, and folly is with him. But I your servant did not see the young men of my lord, whom you sent. 26 Now then, my lord, as the Lord lives, and as your soul lives, because the Lord has restrained you from bloodguilt and from saving with your own hand, now then let your enemies and those who seek to do evil to my lord be as Nabal. 27 And now let this present that your servant has brought to my lord be given to the young men who follow my lord. 28 Please forgive the trespass of your servant. For the Lord will certainly make my lord a sure house, because my lord is fighting the battles of the Lord, and evil shall not be found in you so long as you live. 29 If men rise up to pursue you and to seek your life, the life of my lord shall be bound in the bundle of the living in the care of the Lord your God. And from the hollow of a sling. 30 AND WHen the Lord has done to my lord according to all the good that he has spoken concerning you and has appointed you prince over Israel, 31 my lord shall have no cause of grief or pangs of conscience for having shed blood without cause or for my lord taking vengeance himself. 

 And when the Lord has dealt well with my lord, then remember your servant."

 

32 And David said to Abigail, "Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, who sent you this day to meet me! 33 Blessed be your discretion, and blessed be you, who have kept me this day from bloodguilt and from avenging myself with my own hand! 34. For as surely as the Lord, the God of Israel, lives, who has restrained me from hurting you, unless you had hurried and come to meet me, truly by morning there had not been left to Nabal so much as one male."

 35 Then David received from her hand what she had brought him, AND HE Said to her, " Go up in peace to your house. See, I have obeyed your voice, and I HAve granted your pettion."

 

5.나발의 죽음

아비가일이 다윗에게 싹싹 빌고 돌아왔는데 나발은 만취 상태였습니다. 아마 아비가일 입장에서는 네가 지금 제정신이냐, 내가 지금 너 살리려고 무슨 짓까지 하고 왔는 줄 아냐? 너 죽다 살아났다. 내가 다윗에게 어마무시한 뇌물 바치고 오는 길이여.

이 말을 들은 나발은 충격을 받고 몸이 굳어졌고 열흘 뒤에는 여호와가 그를 공격해서 죽었다고 합니다. 이게 말이 됩니까?

36 And Abigail came to Nabal, and behold, he was holding a feast in his house, like the feast of a king. And Nabal, and behold, he was holding a feast in his house, like the feast of a king. ANd Nabal's heart was merry within him, for he was very drunk. So she told him nothing at all until the morning light. 37 In the morning, when the wine had gone out of Nabal, his wife told him these things, and his heart died within him, and he became as a stone. 38 And about ten days later the Lord struck Nabal, and he died.

 

나발은 하나님이 열흘 후에 쳐서 죽였다고 하였지만 뭘로 어떻게 죽였는지에 관해서는 나오지 않습니다. 그렇게 못돼 처먹은 인간이 아내의 말 한마디로 두려움에 낙담하였고 열흘 뒤에 죽었다? 너무 납득이 안 가는데 그에 관해 이의를 제기하는 사람은 없어 보입니다.

일단 아비가일은 많은 재산을 가지고 다윗에게 바치며 마치 나발의 죽음을 암시하는 듯합니다. 저런자는 하나님이 죽여줄 거라는 식으로 말이죠.

다윗의 눈빛을 아비가일이 몰랐을 리 없었겠죠. 저는 아비가일의 독살과 다윗의 지시라는 생각도 해봅니다. 나발만 죽으면 다윗은 그 많은 재산과 어여쁜 여자를 취할 수 있기 때문입니다.

누가 봐도 타살인데 하나님이 죽였다고 하는 게 정말로 소름 끼칩니다.

6. 다윗의 반응

나발이 죽었다는 소식을 들은 다윗은 자신 대신 하나님이 그의 악행을 갚아주셨음을 찬양합니다. 그리고 다윗은 곧장 아비가일을 자신의 아내로 취합니다. 이미 아내가 있음에도 미망인을 아내로 취하고 거기에 더해 사마리아 평야 지역의 미혼의 일반인 아히노암도 아내로 취합니다. 그녀와의 사이에서 첫아들 암논을 낳았습니다. 

 

성경에는 그런 내용은 나오지 않지만 아비가일 덕분에 막대한 부자가 된 것은 아닐까 하는 생각입니다. 400인의 부하를 데리고 죽일 수 있었고 그렇게 해서 착취했도 됐지만 아비가일이 자기 손에 피를 묻히게 해 주소서 한 것 같단 말이죠. 그래서 다윗이 청혼하니 발아래 납작 엎드려서 분부 받잡겠습니다. 한 것이죠. 일단 왕비가 되는 거니 보통 똑똑한 여자가 아닌 것 같습니다.

 

39 When David heard that Nabal was dead, he said, "BLessed be the Lord who has avenged the insult I RECEIVED AT THE HAND OF Nabal, and has kept back his servant from wrongdoing. The Lord has returned the evil of Nabal on his own head." Then David sent and spoke to Abigail, to take her as his wife. 40 When the servants of David came to Abigail at Carmel, they said to her, "David has sent us to you to take you to him as his wife." 41 ANd she rose and bowed with her face to the ground and said, "Behold, your handmaid is a servant to wash the feet of the servants of my lord."

  42 And Abigail hurried and rose and mounted a donkey, and her five young women attended her she followed the messengers of David and became his wife.

 

그리고 44절도 충격적입니다. 사울은 다윗이 아내를 맞이했다는 소식을 들었던 것인지 다윗의 아내 미갈을 평범한 집안의 남자 미갈과 결혼을 시켜 버립니다. 사울도 다윗도 제정신으로 보이진 않는데 그 시대는 그런 게 흔한 일이었다고 하니 일단 그러려니 합니다.

 

  43 David also took Ahinoam of Jezreel, and both of them became his wives. 44 Saul had given Michal his daughter, David's wife, to Palti the son of Laish, who was of Gaallim.
