사울의 비극적인 죽음을 다룬 사무엘상 31장

드디어 사무엘상도 31장을 끝으로 마무리를 짓게 됩니다. 마지막 장은 이스라엘의 초대 왕 사울의 비극적인 죽음을 다룬 장입니다. 블레셋 전투에서 사울 아들들이 전사하며 사울 왕국의 몰락을 보여줍니다.

1. 블레셋 전투에서의 패배

1. Now the Philistines fought against Israle. and the men of Israel fled before the Philistines and fell slain on Mount Gilboa. 2. And the Philistines overtook Saul and his sons, and the Philistines overtook Saul and his sons, and the Philistines struck down Jonathan and Abinadab and Malchi-shua, the sons of Saul. 3 The battle pressed hard against Saul, and the archers found him, and he was badly sounded by the archers. 4. Then Saul said to his armour bearer, "Draw your sword, and thrust me through with it, lest these uncircumcised come and thrust me through, and mistreat me." But his armour bearer would not, for he feared greatly. Therefore Saul took his own sword and fell upon it.

 

참으로 아이러니합니다. 다윗이 쫓기는 몸이었고 무능한 왕 사울이 지배한 이스라엘은 하나님의 선택도 받지 못하고 운도 따르지 못합니다. 오히려 적국의 블레셋과 도모해서 다윗은 이스라엘을 칠 상황이었지만, 신은 그것도 막아 주셨고요. 어찌 되었든 적국 블레셋을 통해 이스라엘을 응징하게 되는 아이러니한 상황이 벌어집니다.

 

전장에서 다윗은 참전하지 않았지만 그럼에도 불구하고 이스라엘은 패배합니다. 길보아 산 전투에서 이스라엘은 크게 패배하고 사울의 세 아들 요나단, 아비나답, 말기수아가 전사합니다. 안타깝게도 아비 사울보다 훌륭하였고 다윗을 지지한 요나단도 무모한 전장에서 죽음을 당하고 말았습니다.

2. 사울의 자살

5. And when his armour bearer saw that Saul was dead, he also fell upon his sword and died with him. 6. THus Saul died, and his three sons, and his armour bearer, and all his men. on the same day together. 7 ANd when the men of Israel who were on the other side of the valley and those beyond the Jordan saw that the men of Israel had fled and that Saul and his sons were dead, they abandoned their cities and fled. And the Philistines came and lived in them.

 

전장에서 패배하고 아들들마저 죽자 사울은 할례를 받지 않은 자들에게 모욕당하는 것을 피하기 위해 자신의 무기를 든 자에게 자신을 죽여달라고 합니다. 무기를 든 자가 두려워하며 거부하자 사울은 스스로 칼 위에 엎드려져 자살을 합니다. 그를 따르던 무기를 든 자도 사울이 죽은 것을 보고 함께 죽었습니다. 무능한 왕도 왕이라고 따라 죽네요.

3. 사울 시신에 대한 모욕

8. The next day, when the PHIListines came to strip the slain, they found Saul and his three sons fallen on Mount Gilboa. 9. So they cut off his head and stripped off his armour and sent messengers throughour the land of the Philistines, to carry the good news to the house of their idols and to the people. 10. They put his armour in the temple of Ashtaroth, and they fastened his body to the wall of Beth-shan. 11. But when inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead heard what the PHilistines had done to Saul, 12 all the valiant men arose and went all night and took the body of Saul and the bodies of his sons from the wall of Beth shan, and they came to Jabesh and burned them there. 13 And they took their bones and buried them under the tamarisk three in Jabesh and fasted for seven days.

 

이스라엘 백성들은 사울과 그 아들들의 죽음을 보고 도망치고, 블레셋 사람들은 이스라엘 성읍을 점령합니다. 블레셋 사람들은 길보아 산에서 죽은 사울과 그의 아들들의 시체를 발견하고, 사울의 머리를 베고 갑옷을 벗겨 자신들의 신당과 온 나라에 보내 승리를 알리고 조롱합니다. 사울의 갑옷은 아스다롯 신당에 걸리고 그의 시체는 벧산 성벽에 못 박힙니다.

4. 야베스 길르앗 사람들의 보은

그런 와중에도 과거 사울에게 보은을 입었던 아베스 사람들은 사울과 그의 아들들의 시체를 가져와 야베스로 돌아옵니다. 그들은 시체를 화장하고 뼈를 가져다가 야베스 에셀 나무 아래에 장사하고 칠일 동안 금식하며 장사를 지내주었습니다.
