뒤끝있는 사무엘의 면모가 엿보인 사무엘상 12장

사무엘상 12장은 자신이 직접 자신이 결백함을 선언하고, 왕을 요구한 백성의 죄를 지적한 뒤 회개를 촉구하며, 순종하면 복, 불순종하면 멸망할 것이라 경고하는 내용입니다. 가스라이팅을 당한 백성들은 뒤늦게 반성하는 기색이 역력하고요.

1. 사무엘의 정직한 통치 자화자찬

왕도 아닌 것이 통치자도 아닌 것이 그저 판관에 불과한 사람이 왜이렇게 자기 자랑을 하는지 모르겠습니다. 왕도 아닌 사람이 자기 통치 기간에 잘했다고 자랑을 하는 이유를 모르겠습니다. 그런데 이건 알고보면 명백한 선긋기로 보입니다. 왕정에 반대하는 입장이었는데 백성들은 왕을 원했으니, 그는 자는 누구보다 잘했다. 그런데 너희들이 원하는 왕정이 과연 잘 될까? 뭐 이런 것 같습니다.

 

And Samuel said to all Israel, "Behold, I have obeyed your voice in all that you have said to me and have made a king over you. 2 And now, behold, the king walks before you, and I am old and grey; and behold, my sons are with you. I have walked before you from my youth until this day. 3 Here I am; testify against me before the Lord and before his anointed. Whose ox have I taken? Or whose donkey have I taken? Or whom have I defrauded? Whom have I Oppressed? Or from whose hand have I taken a bribe to blind my eyes with it? Testifu against me and I will restore it to you." 4 They said, "You have not defrauded us or oppressed us or taken anything from any man's hand." 5. And he said to them, "The Lord is witness against you, and his anointed is witness this day, that you have not found anything in my hand." And they said, "He is witness."

그렇게 청렴하고 공정하고 일을 잘했는데 아들들이 그모냥이었나 싶기는 합니다. 자기가 아무리 잘했어도 부전자전이라고 아비가 못났으니 자식들이, 그것도 성소 앞에서 여자나 폭행하고 그런 것 아니겠습니까?

2. 사무엘의 고별 연설

무슨 미련이 그리 많았는지 고별 연설도 참 거창하게 하네요. 그가 말하는 핵심은 나는 이렇게 통치를 잘했지만 진짜로 너희를 다스린 왕은 언제나 하나님이었다고 합니다. 그런데 너희가 항상 일을 그르쳤다는 말 같습니다.

 

6. And Samuel said to the people, "The LOrd is witness, who appointed Moses and Aaron and brought your fathers up out of the land of Egypt. 7 Now therefore stand still that I may plead with you before the Lord concerning all the righteous deeds of the Lord that he performed for you and for your fathers. 8 When Jacob went into Egypt, and the Egytians oppressed them, then your fathers cried out to the Lord and the Lord sent MOses and Aaron, who brought your fathers out of Egypt and made them dwell in this place. 9 But they forgot the Lord their GOd. And he sold them into the hand of Sisera, commander of the army of Hazor, and into the hand of the Philistines, and into the hand of the king of Moab. And they fought against them. 10 ANd they cried out to the Lord and said, 'We have sinned, because we have forsaken the Lord and have served the Baals and the Ashtaroth. But now deliver us out of the hand of our enemies, that we may serve you.' 11 ANd the Lord sent Jerubbaal and Barak and Jephthah and Samuel and delivered you out of the hand of your enemies on every side, and you lived in safety. 12. And when you saw that Nahash the king of the Ammonites came against you, you said to me, 'No, but a king shall reign over us', when the Lord your God was your king. 13 ANd now behold the king whom you have chosen, for whom you have asked; behold, the Lord has set a king over you. 14. If you will fear the Lord , and if both you and the king who reigns over you will follow the Lord your God, it will be well. 15 But if you will not obey the voice of the Lord, but rebel against the commandment of the Lord, but rebel against the commandment of the Lord, but rebel against the commandment of the Lord, but rebel against the commanment of the LOrd, but rebel against the commandment of the LOrd, then the hand of the Lord will be against you and your king.

 

그런 과정 속에 징계도 서슴지 않습니다. 너네가 하나님을 왕으로 모시는 대신 너희들이 왕을 세웠으니 너희 목전에 큰 일을 행하실거다. 보리 추수 때에 우레와 비를 보내셨다고 합니다. 보리 추수철은 건기라 천둥과 비는 매우 드문 현상인데요. 하나님의 징계적 계시임을 강조합니다. 참 심보도 고약하네요. 사울도 관여해서 왕으로 직접 뽑아 놓고서는 무슨 징계를 한답시고 그런 자연 현상을 벌로 주시는지 모르겠습니다.

 

16 Now therefore stand still and see this great thing that the Lord will do before your eyes 17 Is it not wheat harvest today? I WILL call upon the LORD, that he may send thunder and rain. And you shall know and see that your wickedness is great, which you hae done in the sight of the Lord, in asking for yourselves a king." 18. So Samuel called upon the LORD, AND THE LOrd sent thunder and rain that day, and all the people greatly feared the Lord and Samuel.

3. 사사에서 선지자로

그렇게 한평생을 왕 같은 사사로 보냈던 사무엘은 아들들을 후계로 내세우지 못한 원통함을 뒤로하고 선지자로서의 역할을 하려나 봅니다. 실제 사무엘은 그 사람 만큼은 청렴하고 정직하게 보낸 인물로 묘사되고 있습니다. 그런데 참으로 아이러니한 것이 그렇게 통치를 잘했는데 백성들은 왜 그의 시대에 왕을 원한 걸까요?

4. 가스라이팅 후 백성의 회개

그렇게 사무엘이 일장 연설을 늘어놓고 하나님이 화가 나서 너희에게 천둥과 비를 내렸다느니 그러니 백성들이 자각을 하게 됩니다. 우리가 큰 실수를 한 거구나. 그러면서 사무엘에게 매달리죠. 회개하고 하나님한테 말을 잘해달라는 등...사무엘은 그제야 원하는대로 일이 척척 진행되는 군 하지 않았을까 싶습니다. 할수없지 뭐. 내가 좀 도와줄게. 그러면. 이런 거잖아요.

 

19 And all the people said to Samuel, "Pray for your servants to the LORD your God, that we may not die, for we have added to all our sins this evil, to ask for ourselves a king." 20 And Samuel said to the people, "Do not be afraid; you have done all this evil Yet do not turn aside from following the LOrd, but serve the LORD with all your heart. 21 And do not turn aside after empty things that cannot profit or deliver, for they are empty. 22 For the Lord will not forsake his people, for his great name's sake, because it has pleased the Lord to make you a people for himself. 23 Moreover, as for me, far be it from me that I should sin against the Lord by ceasing to pray for you, and I will instruct you in the good and the right way. 24 Only fear the Lord and sere him faithfully with all your heart. For consider what great things he has done for you. 25 But if you still do wickedly, you shall be swept away, both you and your king."

 

물론 사무엘 입장이 이해가 안 가는 것도 아닙니다. 사무엘도 경험해보지 못한 왕정에 대한 두려움이 있지 않았을까 싶습니다. 어릴적부터 하나님을 섬긴 입장에서 절대 권력자이자 왕인 하나님을 버리고 인간 왕을 세운다는 게 충격으로 다가오긴 한 것 같습니다.

승자가 기록한 정치 이야기

성경에서 보기 드물게 청렴하고 정직한 인물로 묘사된 사무엘이지만 알고보면 자화자찬, 자기 입으로만 나온 말이었습니다. 기득권이니 역사에도 좋게 썼을 테고요. 아무리 생각해도 사무엘의 아들들이 망나니었다고 해도 백성들이 아니다. 우리는 직접 왕을 원한다 그렇게 말했을리가 없지 않나요? 그러니까 절대 역사서는 액면 그대로 믿으면 안 될 것 같습니다. 사무엘상 12장은 특별할 것 없이 사무엘의 뒤끝 작렬이라는 느낌이 가장 압도적으로 들었습니다.
