이스라엘의 십이지파에 관한 이야기(창세기 49장)

일종의 예언서 같은 느낌을 주는 49장 내용입니다. 야곱이 임종을 앞두고 아들들에게 축복과 저주를 내리기 때문입니다. 좁게는 아들들에게 내린 예언 같은 것이지만 넓게는 12지파의 운명에 관해서 얘기한 것이므로 학자들은 매우 중요하게 여길 장일 것 같습니다.

 

 

 

장자 르우벤에게 장자권 박탈

 

창세기 48장 읽기

 

1. Then Jacob called his sons and said, "Gather yourselves together, that I may tell you what shall happen to you in days to come.

2. " Asemble and listen, O sons of Jacob, listen to Israel your father.

3. " Reuben, you are my firstborn, my might, and the firstfruits of my strength, pre-eminent in dignity and preeminent in power.

 

야곱은 르우벤이 라헬의 하녀이자 야곱의 첩이기도 한 빌하와 패륜을 저지른 것을 알고 있었네요. 그래서 처음에 장자에게 존엄하고 걸출한 능력의 장자이지만 아버지의 침대를 더럽혔기에  승계를 할 수 없다는 의미로 얘기합니다.

4. Untable as water, you shall not have pre-eminence, because you went up to your father's bed;

 

물의 끓음 같은 즉 아비의 침상을 더럽혔다는 구절이 참으로 문학적입니다. 아들이 혈기를 주체하지 못한 것을 끓는 물 같다는 표현으로 하였네요. 충동적이고 급한 성질을 표현한 것도 있고요.

 

 시몬과 레위에게도 저주

 

5. " Simeon and Levi are brothers; seapons of violence are their swords.

6. Let my soul come not into their council; O my glory, be not joined to their company.

7. Cursed be their anger, for it is fierce, and their wrath, for it is cruel! I will divide them in Jacob and scatter them in Israel.

 

시므온과 레위는 요셉을 괴롭힌 응징을 하고 싶어합니다. 그래서 다른 형제들에게도 이들과 가까이 있지 못하게 하였으며 시므온과 레위에게는 분리 혹은 분열과 해체의 벌을 내리는 것 같습니다. 그들의 자식들이 뿔뿔이 흩어지는 것을 암시하는 것이겠죠?

 

 

 

 유다에게 주는 축복

 

8. " Judah, your brothers shall praise you; your hand shall be on the neck of your enemies; your father's sons shall bow down before you.

9. Judah is a lion's cub; from the prey, my son, you have gone up. He stooped down; he crouched as a lion and as a lioness; who dares rouse him?

10. The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor the ruler's staff from between his feet, until tribute comes to him; and to him shall be the obedience of the peoples.

11. Binding his foal to the vine and his donkey's colt to the choice vine, he has vesture in the blood of grapes.

12. His eyes are darker than wine, and his teeth whiter than milk.

 

유다는 다른 자식에 비해 축복을 내립니다. 왕의 혈통이 유다에게서 나올 것이라고 하는데요. 예수가 유다의 혈통이라는 것을 암시하는 것 같기도 하고요. 성경을 잘 모르는 입장에서 유다하면 예수를 배신한 그 유다만 생각이 나는데요. 성경에는 유다라는 이름이 꽤 많이 등장합니다. 알고 보니 유다라는 이름은 찬양이란 뜻이 들어가 있다고 하네요. 

 

 

 장사의 달인 제블룬 그밖에

 

 

13. "Zebulun shall dwell at the shore of the sea; he shall become a haven for ships, and his border shall be at Sidon.

 

제불룬의 후손들에게는 바다 근처 무역과 상업의 번성을 예언하였습니다. 장사의 달인 가문으로 키우려나 보네요.

 

14. "Issachar is a strong donkey, crouching between the sheepfolds.

이사차르는 특별히 지은 죄도 없는 것 같은데 열심히 일하는 노예 가문으로 만들어 놓았네요. 요즘 식으로는 용역의 달인 정도가 아니려나요? 쓰레기 치우는 일꾼도 필요하니까요. 골격이 좋은 나귀란 표현으로 아무튼 농부라던가 일꾼 가문은 맞는 것 같습니다. 

 

15. He saw that a resting-place was good, and that the land was pleasant, so he bowed his shoulder to bear, and became a servant at forced labour.

 

16. "Dan shall judge his people as one of the tribes of Israel.

 

댄에게는 아무래도 법조인 가문을 만들어주려나 봅니다. 심판관을 배출하고 뱀의 용기를 가지고 있다고 하는데요.  

뱀의 용기라기보다는 뱀의 지혜나 교활함 같은 지능을 강조한 것이 아닐까요?

 

17. Dan shall be a serpent in the way, a viper by the path, that bites the horse's heels so that his rider falls backwards.

 

찾아보니 단의 후손이 삼손이라고 하네요. 삼손이 법조인으로 심판하는 게 아닌 힘으로 심판을 하는 거였네요. 법조인은 취소입니다.

 

 

 

18. I wait for your salvation, O Lord.

19. " Raiders shall raid Gad, but he shall raid at their heels.

가드에게는 성공한 전사가 되어 적들을 극복한다고 나옵니다. 

 

20. "Asher's food shall be rich, and he shall yield royal delicacies.

아셀은 음식의 달인 가문으로 만든 것 같습니다. 사주로 따지면 식신 발달해서 자손이 번성하고 맛있는 음식을 제공한다고 하니 한국 기업으로 따지면 신세계 푸드나 풀무원 가문쯤 되려나 봅니다.

 

21. "Naphtali is a doe let loose that bears beautiful fawns.

 

나프탈리에게는 아름다운 암컷의 능력을 주었다는데 할리우드 최고 여배우 에바 가드너가 떠오르는 이유가 뭘까요. 아무래도 화류계 쪽으로 성공할 것을 예언하는 것 같네요.

 

 가장 사랑하는 아들 요셉에게는 무슨 축복?

22. "Joseph is a fruitiful bough, a fruitful bough, a fruitful bough by a spring; his branches run over the wall.

 

당연히 요셉에게도 축복을 내립니다. 그냥 원체 너는 복이 많은 놈이다,라고 말하는 것만 같네요. 그리고 두 아들이 영향력 있게 잘 큰다고 하니 이보다 더한 축복이 또 있으려나요.

 

23. The archers bitterly attacked him, shot at him, and harassed him severely,

24. yet his bow remained unmoved; his arms were made agile by the hands of the Mighty One of Jacob(from there is the Shepherd, the Stone of Israel),

 

또한, 활의 명수로도 나오는데요. 활 쏘는 자라고 하니 왠지 주몽이 떠오릅니다. 요셉과 주몽이 왠지 많이 비슷한 것 같지 않나요?

 

 

 

25. by the God of your father who will help you, by the Almighty who will bless you with blessings of heaven above, blessings of the deep that crouches beneath, blessings of the breasts and of the womb.

26. The blessings of your father are mighty beyond the blessings of my parents, up to the bounties of the everlasting hills. May they be on the head of Joseph, and on the brow of him who was set apart from his brothers.

 

 탐욕스러운 늑대 벤야민?

27. "Benjamin is a ravenous wolf, in the morning devouring the prey and at evening dividing the spoil."

28. All these are the twelve tribes of Israel. This is what their father said to them as he blessed them, blessing each with the blessing suitable to him.

29. Then he commanded them and said to them, "I am to be gathered to my people; bury me with my fathers in the cave that is in the field of Ephron the Hittite,

30. in the east of Mamre, in the land of Canaan, which Abraham bought with the field from Ephron the Hittite to possess as a burying place.

31. There they buried Abraham and Sarah his wife. There they buried Isaac and Rebekah his wife, and there I buried Leah

32. the field and the cave that is in it were bought from the Hittites."

33. When Jacob finished commanding his sons, he drew up his feet into the bed and breathed his last and was gathered to his people.

 

벤야민에게도 딱히 나쁜 말을 하는 것 같진 않은데요. 늑대처럼 탐욕스럽게 먹이를 집어삼키고 전리품을 나눠 갖는다는 것을 보니 무슨 ufc 나가는 용사 집안이려나요? 체육인 가문으로 키우시려나?

 

 

아무튼, 열두 형제에게 각기 다른 축복과 저주 그리고 운명을 알려주니 학자들 역시 49장을 매우 중요하게 여기며 해석도 각기 달리 하게 되지 않을까 싶습니다.
