작살꾼의 정체와 먼저 침실을 쓰게 된 이스마엘(모비딕 챕터3)

함께 침대를 쓰기로 한 작살꾼이 오질 않자 이스마엘은 여관 주인에게 따져 묻고 특히 머리를 파는 게 무슨 말이냐며 화를 냅니다. 여관주인은 자초지종을 설명하고 그에게 다른 침실을 안내해 줍니다. 어찌 보면 더 잘 된 일 같기도 하고요.

 

 

여관 주인에게 따지는 이스마엘

 

'I'll break it for him,' said I , now flying into a passion again at this unaccountable farrago of the landlord's.

'It's broke a'ready' said he.

'Broke, ' said I - 'broke, do you mean?'

'Sartain, and that's the very reason he can't sell it, I guess.'

 

이스마엘이 화가 날 만도 하였죠. 같이 방을 쓰기로 한 남자는 오질 않고 여관 주인장은 지속해서 이죽거리고 있는 데다 무슨 작살꾼이 머리를 팔러 나갔다는 소릴 하지 않나. 그래서 이스마엘이 자기가 그를 위해 부서뜨리겠다고 하니 여관주인은 벌써 깨졌다고 합니다. 이스마엘은 되물었고요. 그러자 여관주인은 사르테인 그게 팔 수 없는 가장 큰 이유라고 추측한다고 합니다. 사르테인은 누굴 지칭하는 것인지 모르겠네요. 

 

 

 

 

'Landlord, ' said I , going up to him as cool as Mt. Hecla in a snow storm-'landlord, stop whittling.

 

이스마엘은 냉기를 잔뜩 품은 채 주인장 곁으로 다가갔습니다. 그것을 눈보라를 맞은 헤클라 산 같다고 표현하였는데요. 헤클라 산은 아이슬란드의 남쪽에 있는 활화산으로 지옥으로 가는 입구라고 불린 곳이라고 합니다. 

 

 

You and I must understand one another, and that too without delay. I come to your house and want a bed; you tell me you can only give me half a one; that the other half belongs to a certain harpooneer.

 

아무튼 이스마엘은 주인장에게 따지기 시작합니다. 네가 간과한 게 있는 것 같은데 말이야 하면서 말이죠. 

 

 

 

And about this harpooneer, whom I have not yet seen, you persist in telling me the most mystifying and exasperating stories, tending to beget in me an uncomfortable feeling towards the man whom you design for my bedfellow- s sort of connexion, landlord, which is an intimate and confidential one in the highest degree. I now demand of you to speak out and tell me who and what this harpooneer is, and whether I shall be in all respects safe to spend the night with him. And in the first place, you will be so good as to unsay that story about selling his head, which if true I take to be good evidence that this harpooneer is stark mad, and I've no idea of sleeping with a madman; and you, sir , you I mean, landlord, you, sir by trying to induce me to do so knowing'y, would thereby render yourself liable to a criminal prosecution.'

 

그러니까 요지는 작살잡이와 방을 같이 쓰게 하자고 해놓고서 함께 잠을 잘 상대를 두렵게 만드는 저의가 무엇이냐, 그리고 당신 말대로 머리를 팔러 다니는 사람이라면 범죄자인데 어쩌고저쩌고 나름 논리적으로 따져 묻고 있습니다.

'Wall,' said the landlord, fetching a long breath, 'that's a purty long sarmon for a chap that rips a little now and then. But be easy, be easy, this here harpooneer I have been tellin's you of has just arrived from the south seas, where he bought up a lot of ' balmed New Zealand heads(great curios, you know), and he's sold all on'em but one, and that one he's trying to sell to- night, cause to- morrow's Sunday, and it would not do to be sellin' human heads about the streets when folks is goin's to  churches. He wanted to , last Sunday, but I stopped him just as he was goin' out of the door with four heads strung on a string, for all the airth like a string of inions.'

 

 

 

이스마엘은 자기가 풋내기가 아니라고 했지만 여관주인의 긴 한숨은 그를 애송이로 보는 게 맞는 것 같습니다. 여관주인은 이스마엘에게 보다 구체적인 얘기를 해줍니다. 뉴질랜드 원주민, 그러니까 마오리족의 미라 머리를 말한 것이겠죠. 그것을 진짜로 팔러 나간 거라고 합니다.

 

이제 막 남해에서 돌아온 그가 향유를 바른 뉴질랜드 머리를, 알다시피 값나가는 골동품을 다 팔고 하나 남은 것을 팔려고 나갔다고 합니다. 더군다나 신성한 주말에 머리를 팔기는 좀 거시기하니 어떻게든 금요일 밤에 팔아 치우려고 말입니다. 그리고 그는 덧붙여서 말합니다. 그는 지난 일요일에도 머리 서너 개를 주렁주렁 매달고 나가려는 것을 자신이 간신히 말렸다면서요.

 

 

This account cleared up the otherwise unaccountable mystery, and showed that the landlord, after all , had had no idea of fooling me- but at the same time what could I think of a harpooneer who stayed out of a Saturday night clean into the holy Sabbath, engaged in such a cannibal business as selling the heads of dead idolators?

 

여관 주인이 이스마엘을 속이거나 놀릴 의도가 없이 명료하게 얘기를 해주었지만 이스마엘 입장에서는 자신의 룸메이트가 마오리족의 식인 전리품을 파는 작살꾼이란 사실을 어떻게 받아들여야 할지 난감했을 겁니다. 

 

 

 

 'Depend upon it, landlord, that harpooneer is a dangerous man.'

'He pays reg'lar, ' was the rejoinder. 'But come , it's getting dreadful late, you had better be turning flukes- it's a nice bed: Sal and me slept in that' ere bed the night we were spliced. There's plenty room for two to kick about in that bed; it's an almighty big bed that, Why, afore we give it up, Sal used to put our Sam and little Johnny in the foot of  it. But I got a dreaming and sprawling about one night, and somehow, Sam got pitched on the floor, and came near breaking his arm. Arter that, Sal said it wouldn't do. Come along here, I'll give ye a glim in a jiffy;' and so saying he lighted a candle and held it towards me, offering to lead the way. But I stood irresolute; when looking at a clock in the corner, he exclaimed ' I vum it's Sunday- you won't see that harpooneer to- night; he's come to anchor somewhere - come along then; do come; won't ye come?'

 

이스마엘은 여관주인에게 그 하푸너는 위험한 사람이라고 경고하지만 여관주인은 방세는 꼬박꼬박 낸다고 말합니다. 그러면서 이스마엘 보고도 아무래도 너무 늦었으니 너도 잠을 자야겠다며 그냥 침실을 안내해야겠다고 말한 것 같습니다. 여관주인이 아내와 쓰던 침대인데 엄청 넓어서 그의 아이들도 재웠는데 아이 하나가 떨어진 후 와이프가 꺼림칙해서 쓰지 않은 침실이 있다고 합니다. 그러면서 거길 쓰지 않겠냐고 합니다.

I considered the matter a moment, and then up stairs we went, and I was ushered into a small room, cold as a clam, and furnished, sure enough, with a prodigious bed, almost big enough indeed for any four harpooneers to sleep abreast.

 

 

 

 'There,' said the landlord, placing the candle on a crazy old sea chest that did double duty as a  wash-stand and centre table; 'there, make yourself comfortable now; and good night yo ye.' I turned round from eyeing the bed, but he had disappeared.

 

잠시 생각하다 그를 따라서 작은 방에 도착하니 여관 주인 말대로 장정 네 명이 자도 넉넉한 침대였습니다. 여관주인은 잘 자라는 인사말과 함께 사라졌습니다.  아무래도 이스마엘은 좁은 침대를 생각했던 것이겠죠.
