1. 모든 사람의 오른 눈을 뽑겠다
언제나 그렇듯이 동쪽 변방에 위치한 야베스가 암몬의 나하스, 쉽게 말하면 산적 두목 같은 인물에게 공격을 당합니다. 항복하지 않으면 너희들 오른쪽 눈을 뽑겠다고 협박을 했는데요. 이에 식겁한 야베스 장로들이 자신들한테 7일의 시간을 달라고 합니다. 그리고 사울왕이 있는 곳으로 달려갑니다.
1. Then Nahash the Ammonite went up and besieged Jabesh-gilead, and all the men of Jabesh said to Nahash, "Make a treaty with us, and we will serve you." 2.But Nahash the Ammonite said to them, "On this condition I will make a treaty with you, tha I gougeout all your right eyes, and thus bring disgrace on all Israel." 3 THe elders of Jabesh said to him, "Give us seven days' respite that we may send messengers through all the territory of Israel. Then, if there is no one to save us, we will give ourselves up to you."

2. 사울의 시험대
사울이 있는 기브아에 도착하여 전령이 이 소식을 전하는데요. 농사만 짓던 사울, 그리고 그가 과연 왕 노릇을 제대로 할까 의심하던 백성들에게 위엄을 보일 절호의 기회가 오게 됩니다. 사울은 눈앞의 소 두 마리를 죽여 버렸는데요. 왕이라면서 소를 끌고 농사를 짓고 있던 것이 더 놀랍습니다. 이렇게 광기를 부릴 때마다 하나님의 영이 들어왔다는 표현들을 하더라고요. 삼손 때도 그렇고요. 광기가 왜 하나님 전유물인지 모르겠네요.
4. When the messengers came to Gibeah of Saul, they reported the matter in the ears of the people, and all the people wept aloud.
5. Now, behold, Saul was coming from the field behind the oxen. ANd SAul said, "What is wrong with the people, that they are weeping?" So they told him the news of the men of Jabesh. 6 And the Spirit of God rushed upon Saul when he heard these words, and his anger was greatly kindled. 7 He took a yoke of oxen and cut them in pieces and sent them throughout all the territory of Israel by the hand of messengers, saying, "Whoever does not come out after Saul and Samuel, so shall it be done to his oxen!" Then the dread of the LOrd fell upon the people, and they came out as one man. 8 When he mustered them at Bezek, the people of Israel were theree hundred thousand, and the men of Judah-gilead: 'Tommorrow, by the time the sun is hot, you shall have deliverance.'" When the messengers came and told the men of Jabesh, they were glad. 10 Therefore the men of Jabesh said, "Tomorrow we will give ourselves up to you, and you may do to us whatever seems good to you." 11 And the next day Saul put the people in three companies. And the next day Saul put the people in three companies. And they came into the midst of the camp in the morning watch and struck down the Ammonites until the heat of the day. And those who survived were scattered, so that no two of them were left together.
아무튼, 그렇지만 사울의 광기만으로는 부족한 감이 있었겠죠. 왕권을 장악하지 못한 상태니까요. 사울은 누구든 나와 사무엘을 따르지 않으면 그의 소도 이렇게 될 거라고 으름장을 놓습니다. 사무엘의 정치적 영향력을 무시할 수 없던 것이죠. 사무엘은 내심 안도했을 것 같고요.
3. 성경의 모순
신명기 17장을 보면 시간 여행자도 아니고 앞서 왕에 대한 규범이 나와 있습니다. 이 장에는 각종 규범이 나오는 가운데 왕을 경계하는 왕의 규범에 관해 등장하는데요. 병마를 많이 두지 말 것, 아내를 많이 두지 말 것, 백성 위에 스스로 높이지 말 것 등 왕이 없던 시대에 마치 예견이라도 하듯이 왕에 대한 얘기가 나옵니다. 이것은 예언인지 편집인지 모르겠습니다. 앞으로 이런 일이 올 것을 미리 예언이라도 한 것처럼 보이는데요. 앞선 문명을 겪은 미래에서 온 분이신지 모든 것을 설계하신 분인지는 모르겠지만 이 모든 것을 미리 정해 놓고 알고 있으면서도 이런 날이 올 줄 몰랐던 것처럼 인간에게 왕을 만들어 준 것을 탐탁지 않아 했다는 것이 참으로 모순적이란 생각이 듭니다.

4. 암몬에서 승리한 사울
사무엘상 11장 12절부터 15절은 사울이 암몬과의 전쟁에서 승리한 이후, 그 리더십에 대한 백성의 인식 변화, 그리고 왕권의 재확인과 공식적인 봉헌이 이루어지는 매우 중요한 정치적 전환 장면입니다. 이 구절은 단순한 전쟁 이후의 후일담이 아니라, 왕정 체제가 상징적으로 확립되는 의식의 장면이라 볼 수 있습니다.
12 Then the people said to Samuel, "Who is it that said, 'Shall saul reign over us?' Bring the men, that we may put them to death." 13 But Saul said, "Not a man shall be put to death this day, for today the Lord has worked salvation in Israel." 14 THEN Samuel said to the people, "Come, let us go to Gilgal and there renew the kingdom." 15 So all the people went to Gilgal, and there they made Saul king before the Lord in Gilgal. There they sacrificed peace offerings before the LORD, and there Saul and all the men of Israel rejoiced greatly.
왕으로서 대접과 인정을 톡톡히 받은 후 사람들은 그를 추앙하였는데요. 아이러니하게도 그가 왕이 된 것을 누구보다 못마땅하게 여기던 사람들이 더 극성으로 그를 지지하고 사울을 거부하던 자들을 국가적 반역자로 규정하고 처형하려는 과도한 열정을 보여줬습니다. 이런 짓도 어째 오늘날과 똑같은 지 모르겠습니다. 그러다 시간이 지나서 또 대중은 등을 돌렸다죠.

왕이라고 뽑아 놓긴 했으나
백성들 입장에서도 에게 저게 왕이라고? 하면서 못마땅했을 겁니다. 그런데 전쟁에서 승리 후 권위를 인정 받았고 그의 주가는 고속 상승합니다. 그래서 그를 깠던 사람들이 오히려 열혈 지지자가 되어 반대한 사람들을 숙청하자고 하는데 사울은 용서를 해줍니다. 그렇게 왕으로 인정을 받은 순간입니다. 하지만 여전히 사무엘의 그늘 아래 놓여 있었고요. 그렇게 대중을 의식하게 된 사울이 어찌 변할지는 예상이 되고 있습니다.
