활의 노래 애가를 만들어 부른 다윗, 사무엘하 1장
사무엘하 1장은 다윗이 아말렉 청년으로부터 사울왕과 요나단의 죽음을 전해 들은 후, 자신이 죽였다고 거짓말한 청년을 즉시 처형하고 사울과 요나단의 죽음을 애통해하며 조가를 만든 내용입니다.
1. 사울이 죽은 후
1. After the death of Saul, when David had returned from striking down the Amalekites, David remined two days in Ziklag. 2. And on the third day, behold, a man came from Saul's camp, with his clothes torn and dirt on his head. And when he came to David, he fell to the ground and paid homage.
다윗이 시글락으로 돌아온 지 사흘째 되던 날, 길보아 산 전투에서 도망쳐 온 아말렉 청년을 만납니다. 그 청년이 말하길 사울이 죽은 것 그리고 사울의 부탁으로 그를 죽였다고 말하며 사울의 왕관과 팔찌를 다윗에게 가져다줍니다. 그러나 사무엘 31장에는 사울이 자기 칼에 엎드려 죽은 것으로 기록된 것으로 보아 청년이 잘 보이기 위해 거짓말을 했을 확률이 높아 보입니다.
3. David said to him, "Where do you come from?" And he said to him, "I have escaped from the camp of Israel." 4. And David said to him, "How did it go? Tell me." And he ansered, "The people fled from the battle, and also many of the people have fallen and are dead, and Saul and his son Jonathan are also dead." 5 Then David said to the young man who told him, "How do you know that Saul and his son Jonathan are dead?" 6. And the young man who told him said, "By chance I happened to be on Mount Gilboa, and there was Saul leaning on his spear, and behold, the chariots and the horsemen were close upon him.
7.And when he looked behind him, he saw me, and called to me. And I answered, 'Here I am.' 8 And he said to me, 'Who are you? I answered him, 'I am an Amalekite.' 9 ANd he said to me 'Stand beside me and kill me, for anguish has seized me, and yet my life still lingers.' 10 So I took beside him and killed him, beause I was sure that he could not live after he had fallen. And I took the crown that was on his head and the armlet that was on his arm, and I have and the armelet that was on his arm, and I have brought them here to my lord."
2. 애통해 하는 다윗
11. Then David took hold of his clothes and tore them, and so did all the men who were with him. 12. And they mourned and wept and fasted until eventing for Saul and for Jonathan his son and for the people of the Lord and for the house of ㅑsrael, because they had fallen by the sword. 13. And David said to the young man who told him, "Where do you come from?" And he answered, "I am the son of a sojourner, an Amaleckite." 14. David said to him, "How is it you were not afraid to put out your hand to destroy the Lord's anointed?" 15 Then David called one of the young men and said, "Go, execute him." AND he struck him down so that he died. 16. And David said to him, "Your blood be on your head, for your own mouth has testified against you, saying, 'I have killed the Lord's anointed.'"
다윗은 사울의 죽음 소식을 듣고 저녁까지 울며 금식하였습니다. 아마도 사울왕의 죽음보다는 친구 요나단의 죽음에 더 슬퍼했을 것 같습니다. 그리고 무엇보다 자신의 조국이 패배했으니 원통하고 애통할 만도 했겠지요. 그리고 거짓을 고했는지 어쨌는지 잘 보이려고 한 청년은 처형을 당했습니다. 청년의 하찮은 생각으로 잘했다고 칭찬을 받을 줄 알았는데 다윗은 그런 위인이 아니었던 겁니다.
3. 다윗의 애가 '활 노래'
다윗은 사울과 요나단을 위해 슬픈 노래 즉 조가를 지어 불렀습니다. 이 노래는 활 노래라고 불리며 야살의 책에 기록되어 유다 자손에게 가르치게 하였습니다. 애가의 내용은 다음과 같습니다.
17. And David lamented with this lamentation over Saul and Jonathan his son, 18 and he said it should be taught to the people of Judah; behold, it is written in the Book Jashar. He said:
19. "Your glory, O Israel, is slain on your high places! How the mighty have fallen! 20. Tell it not in Gath, publish it not in the streets of Ashkelon, lest the daughters of the PHIlistines rejoice, lest the daughters of the uncircumcised exult. 21. "You mountains of Gilboa, let there be no dew or rain upon you, nor fields of offerings! For there the shield of the mighty was defiled, the shield of Saul, not anointed with oil. 32. "From the bolld of the slain, from the fat of the mighty, the bow of Jonathan turned not back, and the sword of Saul returned not empty.
23. Saul and JONathan, beloved and lovely! In life and in death they were not divided; they were stronger than lions. 24. "You daughters of Israel, weep over Saul, who clothed you luxuriously in scarlet, who put ornaments of gold on you apparel.
25. "How the mighty have fallen in the midst of the battle! "Jonathan lies slain on your high places. I am distressed for you, my brother Jonathan, very pleasant have you been to me; your love to me was extraordinary, surpassing the love of women.
27."How the mighty have fallen, and the weapons of war perished!"
애가는 먼저 이스라엘 용사들이 길보아 산에서 죽음을 당한 것을 두고 이스라엘의 슬픔을 노래합니다. 그리고 이 노래는 블레셋 사람들의 기뻐함을 막기 위해 이 소식을 전파하지 말라고 합니다. 그리고 길보아 산에 대한 저주로 이 비극이 일어난 길보아 산에는 이슬과 비가 내리지 않고 제물에 쓸 밭도 없을 것이라고 저주합니다.
그리고 사울과 요나단의 용맹함과 사랑을 찬양하며 특히 요나단의 깊은 우정을 강조합니다. 다윗은 요나단에 대한 사랑이 여느 여인의 사랑보다 진하였다고 표현하며 그의 죽음을 애통해했습니다. 그리고 위대한 용사들이 싸우다 망한 것을 한탄하며 슬픔을 마무리하는 내용입니다.
4. 활 노래라고 지은 이유
활의 노래라고 한 이유는 요나단이 활 솜씨가 매우 뛰어난 용사였기에 그를 기리기 위함이었습니다. 어찌보면 다윗의 애가는 요나단을 잃은 슬픔을 표현한 노래라고 할 수 있습니다. 또한, 사울과 요나단이 속했던 베냐민 지파는 특히 활솜씨가 뛰어난 전사들로 유명했기에 그들을 기리는 차원으로 상징적으로 활의 노래라고 지은 것으로 보입니다.
이스라엘의 초대왕 사울은 약 40년동안 통치하면서 통치의 절반을 다윗을 시기 질투하는 것으로 세월을 보내다 망한 전형적인 케이스로 보입니다. 실제로 절반보다는 짧은 약 10년 정도 된다고 하는데요. 그럴 시간에 나랏일을 더 잘 돌보았으면 어땠을지 요즘 정치 상황과 크게 달라 보이지가 않습니다. 질투의 정치학에 대해 다시금 생각하게 되네요.
